How to Draw a Life-Saving Cartoon

A former patient, Scott, recently shared a terrific story of
humor's healing spirit. I think you'll enjoy reading it and
allowing it to remind you that your humor nature can sometimes
save lives.

Tim and Scott were friends through Alcoholics Anonymous. They
had the same amount of sobriety, often attended meetings
together, and almost always shared a laugh when they saw each
other at a twelve-step group.

Once, during an AA meeting, Tim doodled an outrageously silly
cartoon parodying Scott's break room at work. Scott had to
excuse himself briefly from the room so that his laughter didn't
disturb the meeting.

Tim considered his drawing a funny "classic", so he folded it
and tucked it away in his AA "Big Book".

Five years later, Scott quit coming to meetings. A difficult
and disappointing divorce and two sick, aging parents had
discouraged Scott and sapped his will to recover. Much to Tim's
dismay, Scott appeared on the verge of drinking again; Scott
wasn't taking, nor was he returning phone calls from his
twelve-step friends anymore.

Not a good sign for a person in AA!

Tim wanted to convey to Scott how much he missed his old
friend. So he made a photocopy of that outrageously silly
drawing from five years earlier and mailed it to Scott's home
with a simple note telling Scott he loved him and wanted to see
him back at AA.

Scott was back at an AA meeting that week and is still sober to
this day. Scott freely credits that drawing with bringing him
back. He says it reminded him of how happy and care-free he
once was, and gave him hope that he could feel that way again.

How simple. Yet how important. And if Tim hadn't been in the
habit of letting his humor nature "out to play", he might not
have created that drawing, nor saved it so he could share it
with Scott years later. And Tim might've attended Scott's
funeral rather than hugging his old friend at an AA meeting.

Make sure you don't shortchange yourself or your loved ones. Let
your humor nature have free reign this week and create
opportunities to share your joy with your friends.
