Hello
Learn Jerry Lewis' Secret
to Success

Do you truly realize what a medical and
scientific miracle you are? In fact, if
your parents hadn't procreated exactly when
they did, maybe even at the exact second
they did, the miracle of you would not
exist. And it takes just 64 generations to
trace your ancestry back to Roman times
where the same exact miraculous coupling had
to be done by about
1,000,000,000,000,000,000 people. I'll
reveal the amazing implication of that
number shortly...
Two weeks ago we discussed one of my newest
Fun Commandments, Embrace Your Defeats. The
inspiration to elevate embracing your
defeats comes from one of the most
successful people I know - my good friend,
and a truly miraculous individual, Jerry
Lewis.
Jerry Lewis is one of the most successful
and recognizable celebrities in the world. When
partnered with Dean Martin, in fact,
Lewis' weekly take-home was in excess of
half a million dollars. This, mind you, was
in the 1950's! My friend, that is success
by anyone's standards!
But Jerry's success isn't best measured by
his financial rewards. Jerry has lived a
great life, having fun and doing what he
loves best. And what could be more
rewarding than the adulation of millions of
fans saying, "We love you for making us
happy!"
And I'm about to reveal to you a wonderful
secret that has created almost all of Jerry
Lewis' success.
Jerry told me, one morning in St. Louis,
that most of his success is the result of
his embracing defeat. Specifically, between
bites of bagels and cream cheese, Jerry let
me in on his "7 out of 10" rule. He learned
long ago, it seems, that 30% of the people
he meets will not welcome his 100 watt,
effervescent, and outrageously funny
personality.
Accepting the 30% rejection rate, right from
the start, unburdens Jerry from fear of
rejection. He expects to be turned away by
3 out of ten people - and if he gets a
higher rate of acceptance that is just icing
on the cake. The end result is that Jerry
Lewis is completely unafraid to show his
unbridled sense of humor and his enthusiasm
to everyone he meets (and I mean everyone!)
because he has already embraced defeat.
A defeatist attitude, you say?
I have never know someone who is more
completely and unabashedly himself at all
times than Jerry Lewis. He is, by all
appearances, a man without fear. How
strongly can you say that about yourself? And
I certainly believe the results in
Jerry's life speak for themselves.
Let's bring it closer to home. I know a
very successful salesman, Scott Shireman,
who told me that he was a plodding
journeyman until he learned to embrace
defeat. Scott feared rejection so much that
he had fallen prey to the old salesperson's
saw, "The hardest door to open is your own
front door." Today, Scott earns a very
comfortable six figure salary in a highly
competitive industry simply because he made
his peace with defeat.
What is Scott's secret. It finally dawned
on Scott that in his industry it took
9 "no's" to get 1 "yes." In short order he
realized that he simply had to go out and
root out those "no's" in order to find
success. Scott was soon leaving a failed
sales visit saying, "All right! That's one
more 'no' out of the way. I'm that much
closer to my success!" Once again, I'll let
Scott's success speak to the validity of
embracing defeat.
What will happen when you begin to embrace
your defeats? Will you become the next
Jerry Lewis or Scott Shireman? Perhaps, but
why stop there? You'll no longer be placing
yourself in leg irons and imprisoning
yourself with your own fear.
The sky's the limit when your most
overwhelming fear, your fear of failure,
is alleviated!
By the way, besides being really large do
you know what else is so amazing about your
1,000,000,000,000,000,000 ancestors? That
number represents about 1,000 times more
people than have ever lived! I'll give you
a moment to think about the ramifications of
these facts...that's right, albeit at a
discreet genetic level, there is "incest" in
every family tree. We are, literally, all
related if you go back far enough.
But no matter how many new relatives you've
suddenly become obligated to send birthday
cards to, you're still an individual
destined for great things and defeats are
part of your greatness. See for yourself
what kind of freedom comes from embracing
your defeats. But, please, do me a favor
and share your successes with me. I love to
hear about them!
