Hello
Why Puns are Okay (Even if No One Laughs)

"It all starts with a SMILE"
Can I be frank with you? Because I'm tired of being Clifford. Hardee,
har, har!
Puns are one of my favorite forms of word play. Which is why, I
suppose, I was never asked to be a guest on the Oprah Winfrey
show! I know that puns are usually groan-worthy at best, but
your reaction to them is not why I tell them.
Don't get me wrong. If someone were to say, "Cliff, please stop
making puns" (which has only happened a few dozen times, LOL), I
would - because I'm not out to annoy anyone. But my point is
that I don't make puns because I think I'll elicit peals of
laughter and be the life of the party.
Nope.
I tell puns because the word play excites me.
In the last issue of The Fun Times, I wrote about my friend,
Julie's, new question she asked herself: "What will excite me?" I
got five emails, from Humor Beings, about that question and
I'd like to elaborate upon it. It's a question I hope you have
learned to ask yourself after reading (or re-reading) "It all
Starts with a SMILE".
People everywhere are starting to realize that life is just too
short to worry about superficial, temporary things like "How
much more can I acquire?", "What will make 'them' happy?" or
"What will impress my neighbors?" These types of questions are
just another form of the deadly disease called seriousness. When
you ask yourself those kinds of questions you are taking
yourself too seriously.
If you really believe you are that important and you have that
much power, take a break and step away from the spotlight you've
placed yourself in.
I'm not saying, of course, that you are unimportant. I hope you
know that you are and there is no one else who could ever be
you. What I'm saying is that you are not responsible for
anyone's happiness except your own, nor are you charged with
making anyone's life okay except your own! Give yourself a
break today and let go of the onus which seriousness creates;
other people (even your own children) are always responsible for
themselves.
To help you remind yourself to do this, get in the habit this
week of asking yourself, "What will excite me?" You might think
that sounds selfish and, of course, I want you to be considerate
of others as you answer this question for yourself. But I also
want you to consider that being selfish is your most important
goal - if you make sure you're healthy and happy, you'll be of
much better service and value to others!
Have fun this week and stay excited.
