Hello
Make Your Thanksgiving Meal
Your "First Meal"

What if Thanksgiving dinner were your last
meal? What would you put on the menu? Have
you ever wondered where the custom of
a prisoner's last meal comes from, anyway? I'll
talk more about that in a moment...
Even though it won't be your "last meal,"
you're probably getting ready for a big
one. My favorite Thanksgiving dish is
Connie's three-cheese mac and cheese. In
fact, I love it so much I'd put it on my
last meal menu.
Thanksgiving, by the way, is my favorite
holiday.
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday,
however, not for the meal. Not for the
family gathering either. Not even for the
football game I drift off to sleep
watching, enjoying my full belly.
Nope. I love all those things, but they
don't make Thanksgiving my favorite.
I love Thanksgiving, because it draws your
attention to gratitude. To that end,
Celebrating Everything is one of your most
important Fun Commandments precisely
because it is all about giving thanks. In
fact, around the Kuhn household we still
call Thanksgiving "Celebration Day."
Fran, a patient, taught me a fantastic
strategy to celebrate everything. And
following this method never fails to
generate gratitude.
Fran challenges herself to find something
to compliment everyone she talks with. When
I do this also, I notice my mood is
instantly elevated; complimenting a friend
on her gorgeous smile or calling attention
to a friend's beautiful blue shirt always
makes me feel great (and grateful).
And the is another secret I've found that
almost always prompts my friend to share
something back. I'll reveal it in a moment.
Try Fran's strategy this Thanksgiving. When
Aunt Edna launches into her thinly veiled
criticism of your divorce, tell her how
much your admire her earrings. And here's
the secret tip: after you tell her how much
you love the beautiful earrings, follow up
with the comment, "I'll bet there's a story
behind them."
You'll be amazed at the results.
The tradition of the last meal of a
condemned prisoner, by the way, has varied
origins. Some relate the custom to
Christ's Last Supper. The Greeks, it is
said, didn't want a condemned person to be
hungry on the journey to the kingdom of
death, lest an executed soul be stuck in
purgatory with a case of the grumbles.
Regardless of the last meal origin, make
sure that this Thanksgiving marks
your "first meal." Your first meal, that
is, during which you practice Fran's
compliment everyone strategy. I'd love to
hear how it works for you.

Some Humor to Help You Smile
"I know lots of people have warm memories
of their mothers' cooking, like
Thanksgiving. I have no such memories. When
I think of Thanksgiving, I have one
memory: walking into the kitchen and seeing
lots of pots of boiling water and plastic
bags bobbing up and down. It was like
Thanksgiving on the starship Enterprise."
