How to Have Fun Changing a Flat Tire

Aren't we fortunate to have such an amazing natural resource as
humor? I'm so happy for you that you've decided to take full
advantage of your humor!

I've been thinking this week about a way that humor helps which
I can't emphasize enough.

No matter what circumstances life has for us we always have
three states of being we can choose: enthusiasm, happiness, and
acceptance.

When we are charged up and excited about our circumstances we
can be enthused. We all experience this from time to time and
we love it when it happens. We also know that enthusiasm will
not be our constant state of being.

When we are are pleased about our circumstances we can be
happy. Happiness is not the "on-fire" experience of enthusiasm,
yet is very desirable. With our hightened sense of humor (by
adhering to my Smile Strategies) we can experience happiness
more often than the average bear. And we also know that
happiness will not be our constant state of being.

We're not constantly enthusiastic or happy because, of course,
life hold many tasks and circumstance which do not lend
themselves to such states of being. From the tragic (death,
loss, divorce, goodbyes, etc.) to the irritating (flat tires,
rained out baseball games, long car drives, etc.) to the mundane
(doing the laundry, waiting in the doctor's lobby, meetings,
etc.), we know there are going to be lots of situations that
just don't generate enthusiasm or happiness.

For all those other circumstance we can always choose the state
of acceptance. No matter how difficult, we can always
accept. Acceptance, after all, doesn't mean we are
endorsing the circumstance nor does it mean we are glad;
acceptance simply means we will feel our feelings and do what's
necessary to make our way through it.

And people with fully developed and honed humor natures are the
best at accepting. Your humor nature allows you to find the
gentle humor in your circumstances or even in your
expectations. It helps you accept your circumstances after all
to sit back and gently laugh with yourself about your
expectations that you should never have to deal with any
unwanted or "bad" circumstances.

And once you're able to gently laugh with yourself acceptance
becomes that much easier. In fact, suddenly that long car drive
or the long wait for your doctor becomes much less irritating. Even
the tragic events begin to feel survivable (which, of
course, they are).
