Hello
Can Humor Medicine Cure Addiction?

"It all starts with a SMILE"
People often ask me if the natural medicine of
humor can cure addiction. Here is my take on
the relationship between recovery from addiction and humor
medicine.
It took one patient of mine fifteen years of
recovery in a twelve step program to be ready
for humor medicine. I am not presupposing that
everyone should or will have similar experiences,
but that's how long it took her.
She is still active in the twelve step program
she works. It is a downstream experience for
her to go to meetings, share, sponsor, be sponsored,
and work the twelve steps. It is a discovery
process. And she brings everything she learns
about the natural medicine of humor into that
twelve step process.
It would be "wrong" for me to say to anyone:
"You MUST adhere to the 12 step process!" It
would be just as "wrong" for anyone to say "You
DON'T NEED the 12 step process!" Each of us
has our own path. What I will say to someone
is, "If you feel like you're in the right place,
you probably are."
One thing I've noticed about my patient and
others like her is that she has spent a large
portion of her life seeking quick, magic
solutions. Well intentioned as she was,
she "used" resources like humor medicine outside
her 12 step program to justify her self-harmful
paradigms and remain in denial.
In the end, everything happened just like it
was supposed to for her. It always does. If
I made (make) a "wrong" decision, obviously
it was (is) a lesson I need to learn.
I believe my patient is capable of much, much
more than she believed she was capable of 16
years ago. Or one year ago, for that matter. She
is ready for the natural medicine of
humor. According to my patient, however, the
using that got her to the 12 step program was
just a symptom of a larger problem - thinking
that she wasn't okay and needed to be fixed.
That's a paradigm anyone of us is still capable
of lapsing back into if we're not careful. I
call that paradigm deadly seriousness.
I would never tell a newcomer (anyone who is
actively using something and has an unmanageable
life) to start relying on humor medicine. If
they are like many others, that newcomer's life
might be on the line. And they will find the
natural medicine of humor when the time is right
for them. Just like my patient did.
For anyone struggling with an addiction I want
you to hear this: I know that there is more hope
for you today than you can imagine. And I know
that the natural medicine of humor will be a big
part of that hope - whenever you are ready for it.
