How to Have Fun with Your "Aunt Sally"
this Week

"It all starts with a SMILE"

You think you've got to spend Thanksgiving with some weirdos? On
November 28, 1967 Nobel Prize winning astronomer Anthony
Hewish discovered Little Green Men! More on that later...

Jim Gaffigan, whom I consider the third funniest touring stand-
up comedian today, has a funny bit about Thanksgiving:

"Who thought of this holiday tradition?", Gaffigan asks. "Hey,
how about, on Thanksgiving, we sit around and eat way too much!"

"Don't we do that every day already?, a critic replies in
Gaffigan's bit.

"Okay," comes the reply, "on Thanksgiving, we'll do it
surrounded with people we can't stand."

Not the nicest of ideas, to be sure. But isn't there some
degree of truth to that? I hope you don't have to spend
Thanksgiving with people you "can't stand", but it's certainly
true that you didn't pick your family. For better and for
worse, you got who you got.

The upcoming holidays are a top source of stress for many, many
people. That's why I'm encouraging you to practice my Smile
Strategies, Tell the Truth and Appreciate Often, this week. Following
these strategies will navigate you through even Jim
Gaffigan's version of Thanksgiving and beyond.

Why the stress during this holiday season? I believe this
stress comes largely from our idealized versions of how
it "should be." These ideals have been fueled by advertisers,
television, stories, and movies. These folks are always ready
to show us the Frank Capra, close-knit, loving family - bonded
strongly, enraptured by each other's company, and sharing a
loving gathering at the holidays.

Folks, there's a reason movies are movies! They show us
fantasies! It's okay if your life doesn't look like that!

Frank Capra doesn't direct my life either.

Oh, I love my family. But I encourage you to Tell the Truth
this week and in the weeks to come. It's okay if Aunt Sally
isn't your favorite person to be around. It's alright if your
daughter-in-law rubs you the wrong way. There's a lot of
freedom in admiting that (to yourself).

But don't stop there. I also encourage you to Appreciate Often
this Thanksgiving and during the holidays to come. There's a
lot of freedom in Telling the Truth, but concentrating just on
the things you don't like won't feel good in the long run.

Instead find some things you can appreciate about these people
and hold that in your mind while you spend time around
them. "Gosh," you can tell yourself, "Aunt Sally sure is a
loving person, in her own way, and I think that's
wonderful." "My daughter-in-law," say to yourself, "is really
committed to her beliefs and I can really appreciate that."

Make it your goal to find something to appreciate about each
and every person at your gathering this week. It may or may
not change their behavior at all, but you'll be amazed at what
it does for your spirits! And carry that practice into the
coming weeks as well; you'll love the results.

Little Green Men, by the way, are what Anthony Hewish
lightheartedly called the radio waves he and fellow astronomer
Jocelyn Bell discovered in 1967. Since they had no idea of the
source of this transmission from space, they called it LGM (for
Little Green Men). They later realized they had discovered
pulsars - pulsating, radio wave-emitting, extremely dense
neutron stars.

Good luck turning your "little green men" into more useful
things this week!

The Law of Attraction and the Natural Medicine
of Humor: A Heavenly Match

By Clifford Kuhn, M.D.

Trying to use the law of attraction without the natural
medicine of humor is like flying from New York to California in
an old crop duster. You’ll probably get there, but it’ll be
noisier, dirtier, less safe, and take a heck of a lot longer
than flying in a modern jet aircraft. The natural medicine of
humor is tailor-made for deliberate creation. Like the old
commercial said, if you’re a student of the law of attraction,
you shouldn’t leave home without it!

Some Humor to Help You Smile

"Rhinoplasty, that's what they call it. Rhinoplasty. You've
heard that term. Rhino. Is that necessary? The person
obviously is aware there's a problem. They made the
appointment."
Jerry Seinfeld

"If you are young and you drink a great deal, it will spoil
your health, slow your mind, make you fat - in other words,
turn you into an adult."
