How to Make Bad News Not So Bad

By Cliff Kuhn, M.D.

"It all starts with a SMILE"

I had many responses to the last Fun Times message. I'll
elaborate a bit more on that theme.

When faced with loss, the goal of a humor being is not to be
able to crack jokes. The reason you study my Fun Factor
formula and learn the Smile Strategies from It All Starts with
a SMILE is not so you can make wisecracks in the face of
danger. Your goal is not to become Indiana Jones!

I teach you to develop your humor nature because you will be
able to take yourself less seriously, regardless of the
circumstances. And when you take yourself less seriously, your
stress levels are lowered to miniscule amounts. And you're
more creative, you think more clearly, your immune system
response more quickly, and on and on and on.

There really is no beating humor for constructing the greatest
you possible!

But you've probably met people who crack jokes when they
obviously should be feeling painful feelings. This is an
example of misusing humor - in most cases. Feelings are to be
felt - not stuffed.

But feelings aren't facts! How many times have you been
certain that the worst calamity possible had just occurred to
you? Only to discover, in retrospect, that things had happened
perfectly...even though you couldn't see it at the time.

Please don't mistake laughter and cracking jokes for dealing
healthily with bad feelings. But please understand that your
healthy, properly trained humor nature will keep it all in
perspective when you are dealing with bad feelings. A healthy,
properly trained humor nature will keep you from "going off the
deep end" and making things worse by allowing you a meta-view
of the situation.

In other words, you are not so important that one piece of bad
news (no matter how bad) will cause the earth to open up and
swallow you! This too shall pass. And it's the kind of good
news that your properly trained humor nature will deliver to
you over and over.
