Why You Should be Grateful for Burnt Brats

"It all starts with a SMILE"

With apologies to one of my favorite comedians, Jim Gaffigan, I
am continually amused by how much we involve food in our
holidays and celebrations. No wonder Americans seem to be
stereotyped by other countries as big and fat; I celebrated
American Independence Day with a extra-loaded paper plate at our
picnic.

Yep. I saw fit to eat a bratwurst, two hamburgers, and a steak
on the 4th of July because I know our founding fathers would've
wanted it that way!

In fact, all that great food reminded me of one of my Smile
Strategies. One which always leads you on the path to happiness
more quickly than a loaded bratwurst! Practice wanting what you
have instead of having what you want.

This Smile Strategy reminds you to focus on being grateful for
what you have - instead of looking for the next big thing you
want (which, in your mind, will finally give you that elusive
happiness). This mindset frees you from one of seriousness'
biggest paradoxes: anytime you're unhappy because you're lacking
something you "need" to be happy, you're going to stay unhappy.

Our mind, it turns out, creates for us that which we believe and
know. Therefore, if you believe and know that you are lacking
and "need" something you don't have (I.E. you are trying to have
what you want) you will continue to experience a state of need. I
know that might sound strange and even unfair, but through
years of study and experience I've found it to be true.

Mental states of need always produce more need.

On the other hand, if you follow this Strategy, and focus on
wanting what you have, you are sending a very clear message that
you are not only happy but that you have everything you need in
abundance. And fostering an attitude of gratitude for what you
have cues the universe to deliver more to you. This also might
sound strange and even unfair, but I have invested years of
study and experience in finding this to also be true.

Mental states of gratitude always produce more of what you're
grateful for.

Finding it hard to want what you have right now? Maybe you were
served a burnt bratwurst? My prescription is to start small -
begin by expressing gratitude for things like your eyesight,
your beating heart, your functioning mind, etc. Generate a
real, burning gratitude for those things you commonly take for
granted and watch as more blessings begin to unfold before your
very eyes!

Soon you'll be enjoying fireworks of your own creation. And
have an extra bratwurst for me!

Some Humor to Help You Smile

"Growing up my dad was like, 'Zach, it's not what you say, it's
how you say it.' And he's so right. Take this, for instance: She
had a crack-baby vs. she had a crack, baby."

Zach Galifianakis

"A lot of times, I'll drive for like 10 miles with the emergency
brake. That doesn't say a lot for me, but it really doesn't say
a lot for the emergency brake."

Mitch Hedberg
