Why Your Brain B.S.'s You Everyday

By Cliff Kuhn, M.D.

"It all starts with a SMILE"

Did you know that you, like every other human being, suffer from
change blindness? This is the inability to notice changes that
happen right in front of you as long as you don't watch the
actual change take place. Yep, your brain has developed a
strange shortcut to what it focuses upon...because if it
processed everything in your visual spectrum you might just go
insane. I'll explain how this works in a moment...

Did you know, also, that no one can make you serious? Oh, I'll
admit that you encounter plenty of solemn occasions like board
meetings, funerals, and "Ishtar" playing on HBO. But no one
controls your attitude except you.

And your attitude is so important to your health and success
that I'm writing you a prescription today which will help you
through those solemn occasions you find yourself in: Be
Playful. That's right, your doctor's orders are to be playful
all the time. I want being playful to be your first response,
your ingrained habit, because you'll be able to thwart
seriousness at every turn.

I'm not telling you to start making jokes or elicit laughter
during inappropriate moments. I'm also not prescribing that you
take your responsibilities less seriously. I'm not called "The
Irresponsibility Doctor", for goodness sake! Those activities
would be childish and would not lead you toward your greatest
health and success - the promise my prescription has
consistently delivered to my patients for many years.

No. I'm calling for you to set goals and work hard to attain
them, just as you have always done. I'm also prescribing
playfulness, however, because being playful will get you there
faster and healthier. Energy through the roof, you'll soon
find, accompanies a firm commitment to be playful at all times.

And I've yet to meet a person who says, "No thanks. I don't
need any more energy."

Being playful requires a commitment to take yourself lightly. No
matter your circumstances, taking yourself lightly makes you
more creative, resourceful, adaptive, responsive, and
resilient. Not a bad return on your commitment to be playful
today, huh?

Your brain, by the way, picks and chooses what it focuses upon. And
if an image changes while your brain isn't paying attention
- the way your brain deals with that is to tell you that the
change was there all along! Funny, huh? Like of like when you
got called upon by your teacher, when you weren't paying
attention in class. You just made stuff up, right? It turns
out your brain does the same thing!

Next week I'll give you a blueprint for being playful, no matter
your circumstances. Until then make a commitment to be playful
and notice how much more energy you have!

How to Infuse Yourself with Energy, Health, and
Success - by Focusing on Fun

By Clifford Kuhn, M.D.

It's easy, and dangerous, to forget the distinction between fun
and funny; when we focus on trying to make people laugh we can
quickly get discouraged because we end up putting a lot of
pressure on ourselves. This is a mistake because, as explained
in this article, you short circuit the amazing natural medicine
of humor when you do it.

"You ever talk about a movie with someone that read the book? They're
always so condescending. 'Ah, the book was much better
than the movie.' Oh really? What I enjoyed about the movie: no
reading."

Jim Gaffigan

"My wife's birth control pills also prevent acne. Coincidentally
when I was a teenager, acne was my form of birth control."
