How to Use College Sports to Smile

Last Wednesday was national signing day for
college football teams - the day high
school seniors sign their letter of intent
to attend the university of their choice. I'm
no fanatic about college football, but
the national news coverage caught my eye as
I read the sports. By the way, you should
read the sports each day as a way to get
smiles (whether you're a sports fan or
not). I'll reveal why in a moment...

As uninteresting as national signing day
might be to you, I saw an article that
you'll find valuable. Each college, you
see, receives a ranking from sportswriters
based on the talent of their incoming
freshman class. Well a group of
sportswriters went back four years ago and
re-ranked the freshman classes...not based
on the hype or expectations of the kids,
but on their actual on-field performance.

What did they find?

Many colleges, per their opinion, who
garnered lower ranked incoming classes
rated poorly four years later and vice
versa. My hometown university, for
example, the University of Louisville, was
re-ranked from 67th nationally to 9th
nationally.

So what, right? Unless you're a college
football fan, what's the point? How does
this information relate to smiling and
taking yourself too seriously?

Whoa! Slow down with the questions!

The article reminded me that underrated
things (such as smiling!) should always be
given an opportunity to flourish and help
you. You can't afford to write off things
others regard lightly (like smiling!). What
someone else might see as trivial
(like smiling!) could lead you to your own
personal version of the "national
championship"!

Did I mention that smiling is underrated
and easy to disregard?

A smile and a chuckle today might not get
you the corner office, the perfect spouse,
or a million dollars in your bank account. But
a smile and chuckle today will rest
your brain, boost your immune system,
enhance your communication, elevate your
mood, etc., etc., etc. A smile and a
chuckle today will move you closer to
becoming the person who can attain all
those things you want.

By the way, why should you read the sports
each day? Even if you have no interest in
sports? Because the sports are the only
section of news that consistently talks
about achievements instead of focusing only
on the negative things. And that can help
you smile!
