Hello
How to Get Curious at Work and Home

Welcome! I'm glad you made it. Don't take
getting here for granted; it was tougher
than you think. I'll explain in a moment...
Two weeks ago I talked about my Fun
Commandment, Be Constantly Curious. Today
let's talk about how to apply that
Commandment at home and at work.
You might apply your curiosity to your
work. What will happen if you decide to
greet every single co-worker and customer
this week with the friendliest smile you've
got? How about a decision to answer the
phone this week with, "Hello. How can I
make you happy today?" Who knows until you
try?
How about applying your curiosity to your
family. What will happen if you have a
family dinner and ask each family
member, "What was the most fun thing you
did today?" What will happen if you all go
for a thirty minute walk through the
neighborhood together after dinner? Who
can say? See for yourself.
And your curiosity needs to know no
boundaries. It is very personal. I am
fascinated by the quantum world, so I love
to read about it in my spare time. For
example, did you know that if you blow an
atom up to the size of a cathedral the
nucleus is only the size of a fly inside
it? The rest of an atom is empty space;
99.7% of all matter is nothing but empty
space!
Well...the important thing is that it's
incredibly fun and fascinating to me. You
can foster your own areas of curiosity.
The other great benefit of being constantly
curious is that you remain receptive to new
information. Nothing feeds steroids to
your humor nature quite as fast as new
information being pumped into a stimulated
brain. You might say that curiosity is
like Viagra for your humor nature because...
(I'll let you create your own depraved pun
here).
And by the way, don't take being here for
granted. Trillions of atoms, previously
drifting about, came together to form you
in such a unique, specialized, and amazing
intricate way that it has never occurred
before and never will again. And these
atoms will, for reasons we can't quite
know, oblige you by engaging in countless
cooperative maneuvers which will keep you
alive.
How cool is that? See you in two weeks.
