Why Father Doesn't Need to Know Best

Yesterday was Father's Day. You may not be a father, but I'll
bet you had one. I took some time to think about mine
yesterday.

While my dad was far from perfect, when he passed away rather
unexpectedly in 1985, I lost my first humor mentor. My father
taught me a lot about humor's great value; dad often used humor
to de-fuse stressful home situations. And my home was a
stressful place while growing up.

My parents put a lot of pressure on me to be the success they
never considered themselves. After demonstrating fine
scholastic ability at a young age, mom and dad decided I would
become a doctor. Never mind that I only wanted to become the
next Robin Roberts! (I grew up outside Philadelphia...Robin
Roberts was the Phillies' star pitcher).

Forget baseball! My parents regimented my social and academic
life to help push me toward medical success. They were going
to be the proud parents of a "DOCTOR"!

I'll never forget how disappointed my dad was when I told him I
had decided to become a psychiatrist. He said, "Why don't you
want to become a real doctor?" It's a funny story now, but I
didn't have an answer that could satisfy him then.

My dad made his peace with my choice, though I suspect he never
understood it. Getting over our parents' imperfections is a
big part of becoming a happy, responsible adult. And my Fun
Commandment, Forgive Often, played a pivotal role in helping me
get over my dad's disappointment.

In fact, by forgiving my father for being human, I was able to
have a wonderful relationship with him during his later years.

And you know what? Although I never got to become the next
Robin Roberts, five years ago someone got me a old baseball
glove autographed by Robin himself. It was my own son, Greg,
on Father's Day 2003.

I wonder if Greg's humor nature has helped him forgive me for
being an imperfect father myself...for being human? I'm
willing to bet it has (or he's fired). And I hope your humor nature has done
the same for you!
