Hello
A Quiz to Tell You if You Need to
Share the Load

"It all starts with a SMILE"
How often do you hoist the weight of the world on your
shoulders? Come on; answer honestly. I'll bet you're the
essential "go-to" person in your group of friends, family,
and/or workplace. You've activated your humor nature after all,
so why wouldn't people make a habit of coming to you?
This week I want you to focus on a Smile Strategy I've called
Share the Load.
Ask yourself:
1. Do you occasionally feel like you’re the one who always…
(fill in the chore or duty)?
2. Do you sometimes blow up in a fit of anger (that is often
out of proportion to the situation)?
3. Do you think people you live and work with are lazy or
ungrateful?
4. Do you frequently lament that there are not enough hours
in the day, because you can’t get everything finished?
5. Have you had any items sitting on your “to do” list for
longer than three weeks?
6. Do you neglect the important tasks because you’re so
caught up putting out fires with the urgent tasks?
If you answered yes to one or more of those questions, you will
definitely benefit from sharing the load this week!
Let’s take a moment to discuss question six in more detail,
because this is one of the biggest dangers of playing Atlas. Urgent
tasks are those which demand your attention now, they
must be taken care of immediately like a stubbed toe or a
leaking pipe. Important tasks are those which are easy to put
off, they are part of your longer term plans like helping your
son fly a kite or having a heartfelt conversation with your
husband.
Which type of tasks dominates your time?
When you don’t share the load, your plate can fill up fast with
urgent tasks. And when you fall into that trap, you run the
risk of feeling like you’re accomplishing a great deal when, in
reality, you’re only putting out putting bunnies back in the
cage rather than shutting the cage door. Don’t let your life
become filled with urgencies or you’ll soon look back and feel
like it all slipped away and you never did the important things.
That’s what delegation helps you do, take care of yourself. With
the urgent tasks like doing the dishes, mopping the floor,
folding the laundry, filing the reports, recording the data,
etc. taken care of by others, you suddenly have the freedom to
work on the important stuff. Like renewing your spirit enough
to remember to have fun and find joy in all your activities.
Delegation may take more time in the short run, because you
often have to teach someone how to do the task. And it can be
scary because you have to trust that someone else can get the
task done as well as you. But the rewards of delegation far
outweigh these up-front costs.
Share the Load this week and see how many more smiles it brings!
