How to Use Humor When Life
is Not Funny

"It all starts with a SMILE"

A good friend is going through an ugly and stressful divorce. (And,
when you get right down to it, is there any other kind?) Although
her circumstances are less than desirable, some of her
close friends have expressed amazement that she seems to
be...thriving.

Thriving?

You know what's coming next: she's using humor to thrive amid
trying times, right? Not really. At least not in the
traditional sense.

My friend is praying and meditating a lot. She is sharing her
pain with friends. She's attending a support group. My friend
is jogging and weight training. And doing all these things is
keeping her so healthy, that someone recently joked she needs
to write a thank-you letter to her "crazy" ex-husband for
getting her in such great shape.

As she told me about the thank-you-letter joke, my friend
cracked the same smile she must've when it was originally
shared with her. And, just for a moment, during our weighty
conversation, I caught a glimpse of her spirit radiating. Her
beautiful humor nature, which she has been relying upon to stay
afloat spiritually, mentally, and physically.

You see, I want to remind you that your humor nature is not
about laughing out loud. Nor is it there to make un-funny
things seem funny. Your humor nature is a attitude you train
and refine so that you can remember, no matter your
circumstances, not to take YOURSELF TOO SERIOUSLY.

My friend will tell you that, sometimes, it stinks to be her
right now. That's the way it's supposed to feel when you're in
the middle of grieving the loss of an important relationship. And
I would never tell her to laugh that away!

But there's an old saying, "I'm looking forward to looking back
on all of this", which reminds us that this too shall pass. All
things are temporary. And to take our current
circumstances, or ourselves, too seriously is to lose touch
with our humor nature and lose touch with hope and joy.

You already know that your humor nature is your greatest
asset. But you also already know that your humor nature
guarantees you no "protection" from life's ups and downs. As
my friend can readily attest, what your humor nature does is
help you survive (and sometimes thrive) amid those ups and
downs!

Put your humor nature to use today, no matter your
circumstances; while you take your responsibilities seriously,
take yourself lightly.
