Hello
Is this Dr. Kuhn's Strangest Advice
Yet?

Ready to start the year with some strange
advice from the Laugh Doctor? Don't laugh.
That's my advice. "Don't laugh"
Sometimes.
Well...let me explain:
I'm beginning this year with a disclaimer. Laughter
will elevate your mood, enhance
your communication, rest your brain, boost
your immune system, stabilize your blood
pressure, massage your inner organs, and
stimulate your circulation (among many,
many other benefits). But there are times
when laughter is misused.
Laugh to give yourself temporary relief
from your circumstances, but don't laugh to
cover up uncomfortable feelings. Don't
laugh as a way of avoiding how you feel or
denying the things you're not happy about.
I had a patient once who was facing a
pretty terrible cancer diagnosis. She read
The Fun Factor and was spending her time
focusing on fun - which was great! But she
was also using humor to maintain denial
about her disease and the ramifications.
My patient was, in essence, saying that if
she ignored reality long enough it would go
away. And she was saying that her positive
attitude would produce the results of her
choosing. So she was always deflecting
serious talk or examination in lieu of
being happy.
My patience was taking a very powerful
resource (laughter) and misapplying it. Laughter
is not a cure-all. And, when used
to deny reality, it can actually set us
back. (You'll notice that my recommended
article is about using humor to "ease"
depression, not "cure" it!)
This year I encourage you to resolve to
feel your feelings. To deal with the
reality you have on your plate. And, in so
doing, you will free yourself to enjoy the
healthy laughter which you crave.
And that healthy laughter will, in turn,
produce amazing benefits for your health
and success. To make sure that your
laughter is not a form of denial ask
yourself, "Am I being honest with myself
and others about how I feel right now?" If
you answer "yes" than go for it!
If you answer "no" than simply make sure to
get honest. You'll find the freedom quite
refreshing. And the laughter all the more
hearty and helpful!
