Hello
I Dare You to Eat a Doughnut Burger

State Fair mania. Has it hit your area yet?
In Louisville, I attended the Kentucky State Fair this weekend
with my two children and my grandchildren. I saw Border
Collies herding geese (my son wondered if he could train them to
herd his three sons), crazy midway rides, and wonderful
creations by Kentucky artists. What captured my attention,
however, was a new Fair menu item: a hamburger served between
two glazed doughnuts!
Is there some competition among State Fairs to serve the
deadliest food item? Fried twinkies weren't enough? I even saw
that each patron had to sign a hold-harmless waiver before
eating the doughnut burger (kidding).
The Fair, among other things, reminded me of a somewhat painful
memory from the late 1990's. When my first book, The Fun
Factor, was released, my publisher talked me into appearing at
his booth at the State Fair. I was to greet people and sign
copies of the books they purchased.
What I didn't know is that people at the State Fair are looking
for a give-away, not looking to make a purchase. Hundreds of
people came to our booth and sniffed around - looking for a free
drink coozie, a t-shirt, or a yardstick emboldened with the
publisher's name upon it. When they realized there were no
give-aways, the Fair patrons moved on quickly.
The next two days would have been full of disappointment if I
hadn't remembered to use one of my favorite Smile Strategies,
Act and Interact with People.
Of all my Smile Stategies, this one gives you a constant and
reliable source of amusement. Reaching out and touching someone
is often a learned skill, but it pays big dividends. Realize
that taking chances means you will make mistakes, but they will
happen less often if you are willing to learn from them. You'll
also find that a failed action is much more valuable to your
health and success than a failure to act.
Instead of experiencing disappointment and embarrassment, I
actually enjoyed myself meeting a wide array of interesting
folks from every walk of life. I came away from those two days
enriched, instead of angry. And my positive experiences were
the direct result of one thing - a decision to focus on my Smile
Strategy instead of a decision to stew, fume, and feel sorry for
myself.
I was reminded once again that, while I can't always change my
circumstances, I can always be in control of my attitude. And
that's exactly why I share with you about the amazing, natural
medicine of humor. Whether you're reading my newsletter, my
articles, or my books - you're learning how to be in control of
your attitude and how to change your life for the better in the
process.
Whether or not you appear in a booth at your State Fair, please
remember to Act and Interact with People this week. And make
sure you have a CPR-certified friend with you if you decide to
eat that doughnut burger!
