"It all starts with a SMILE"
This Sunday was, for millions of Christians around the world, a
special day: Easter. Whether you celebrated Easter or not, I'd
like to use it as a vehicle today to talk about one of my
favorite Smile Strategies - Play with Perspective.
Playing with perspective is a simple, yet powerful, strategy you
can employ anywhere and anytime. While it might not result in
belly laughs, with practice it will often produce a private
smile and a lightening of your mood. The worst case scenario
for you when you practice Playing with Perspective is that
you'll be reminded that there are always different ways of
looking at things, which is a perfect reminder not to take
yourself (and your current perspectives) too seriously.
Sounds like a good deal to me.
Here's a perfect example of Playing with Perspective from
Easter. If you celebrate Easter you probably learned to do so
from your parents. And you, like any person, don't usually step
back and examine the traditions as an outsider would. Why would
you? The traditions of Easter are normal, routine, and accepted.
But what happens when you play with your perspective? Suddenly
Easter is potentially difficult to understand. And perhaps even
funny.
Imagine explaining Easter traditions to an extraterrestrial
visitor. "Yes, that's right...Easter is one of the two most
special and important holidays for Christians because it is a
celebration of Jesus Christ's arising from his tomb after having
been crucified for the sins of all humanity. Why is Easter so
important? His crucifixion" you might say, "allowed humanity
to be forgiven of their sins and his rising symbolized the
rebirth Christians can experience as they become worthy of entry
into Heaven."
Then you might continue, "How do Christians celebrate the
rebirth of their Lord's only son? By playing hide-and-seek with
multi-colored hard-boiled eggs, of course! Of yeah, there's
also a magic rabbit who visits people's houses and leaves behind
candy for children. Then they all eat a ham."
Of course, those examples are not given to make fun of Easter or
anyone's celebrating of it. But I hope you can see just how
easy it can be to play with perspective and find some gentle
humor in just about anything. Whether or not you celebrated
Easter this year, follow my prescription and privately play with
your perspectives this week.
