How to Use Your Emotions to
Hit a Home Run

My son recently stumbled upon a great way
to know whether or not he is being too
serious or whether he is staying light-
hearted. His emotions.

Let me explain. He realized that his
emotions could actually be used as a gauge
or a guidance system. Since his natural
state of being is joy, he thought, why not
look at negative emotions as signs that he
was being too serious. And, vice-versa,
look at positive emotions as signs that he
was taking himself lightly.

Well, yesterday afternoon my son decided to
put his idea to the test. He plays in a
men's 38-year-old and up baseball league. He
hasn’t played baseball for a long time
and, while he has been feeling confident in
the field, he was putting a lot of pressure
on himself at bat and was not experiencing
very good results.

His desire had always been to get on base
while batting, but he was beginning to
spend every moment in the on-deck circle
and at the plate doubting how the heck he
was going to get there.

Yesterday he announced, to the universe,
his desire to reach base. Then he spent
all his time in the on-deck circle and at
the plate thinking, "It's going to be so
fun to be on first base", "I'm going to
love being on first base", "I'm excited
about being on first base", etc.

And he used his emotions as a gauge for
whether he was getting too serious or going
with the flow of lightness. Every time he
realized he was resisting, because he felt
worried, doubtfull, and/or anxious, he
refocused his attention on those thoughts
of the happiness, fun, and excitement of
already being on base.

Do I even need to tell you that, in
yesterday's game, he came to the plate
three times...and reached first base ALL
THREE TIMES? And not only that, he made it
to at least second base all three times,
had a stolen base, and scored a run!

For Greg, this is so incredible. He feels
like a little kid in a candy store! And
you can too. Go out into this beautiful
day, in our glorious world, and use your
emotions to stay light; use your emotions
as your gauge for whether you’re going with
the flow or resisting!
