Hello
How to Escape Boredom Forever

I was really interested in creating a
collaboration with the woman who invented
the card game, solitaire. (Did you know
she lives in Kentucky?) But she wouldn't
even consider it; she told me, "I prefer to
work alone." Who would've guessed?
In fact she said, "I can't ‘deal’ with you
right now. Get your ‘ace’ out of my
office!" Feeling like a real “joker”, I
turned and “shuffled” back to my car.
Stop! Did you recognize all the puns I
just made? If you’re like me, you got a
few groans out of them. A groan, after
all, is the international symbol that a pun
has been noted.
My puns are perfect reminders that I'm
teaching you to have fun…not be funny! You
may not realize it, but getting a laugh is
not important at all for the natural
medicine of humor.
Puns aren't going to get you many laughs,
but they will remind you to take yourself
more lightly!
Here’s a fact for you: Puns work so well
that I've created a Fun Commandment around
them: Exaggerate and Minimize. Even if you
have no one to share your puns with,
exaggerating and minimizing will keep you
constantly entertained. If you're not
careful, you may never be bored again.
How can I make such a bold claim from your
willingness to play with words?
The English language is a wonderfully
complex creation - by all accounts the most
difficult language to learn. We have so
many double meanings at our disposal that
the entertainment value is endless.
How can you help but have fun with words if
you're willing to try? For example:
1. Knock, knock. Who's there? Euripides. Euripides
who? Euripides pants, I breaka
your face.
2. How much does Internet "spam" annoy you?
3. Hasn't your spouse ever asked you to
help prepare dinner by "cutting the cheese"
for her?
Let me confess something: My son, Greg, and
I almost never have a phone conversation
that doesn't include playing with words. He
might talk to me using some crazy street
slang, using an accent mimicking British
royalty. I might pretend his statement
that he "just mowed the lawn" is a sexual
innuendo. It's nowhere near high comedy,
but we both get off the phone feeling
energized and refreshed.
Hey! Come to think of it, I've watched
some sitcoms with less humorous writing!
If you need a push to start your
exaggerating and minimizing, read Woody
Allen. Allen is the master of truly funny
wordplay. Then start practicing on your
own; look for the absurd, the obvious, or
the subtle puns all around you and you
become amazed at the energy you’ll create
for yourself.
And don't feel any pressure to share your
silliness with anyone else. Exaggerating
and minimizing is just for your fun -
you're not responsible for anyone else's! But
since word play is so infectious, once
begun, feel free to share your's with me. After
all, I can groan as well as anyone!
