How to Find an Expert (So
You Can Ask Her, Of Course)

My friend, Laurie, is our example for this
issue of The Fun Times. Since Laurie
became a devout Buddhist five years ago I
thought I'd share a great answer the Buddha
once gave when asked for the secret of
happiness. I'll share his answer with you
in a moment...

Two weeks ago I alerted you to my Fun
Commandment, Ask An Expert. Asking an
expert for help and guidance puts you
squarely in that rare 1% of our
population who experience real efficacy -
things happen for you pretty close
to how you plan them
. If you missed that
issue, review our back issues here.

This week let's discuss finding your expert.

Finding an expert is not difficult. If
your current network of family and
friends does not provide you one, start
asking around for recommendations. Ask
for people who’ve already achieved the
goal you desire or who have
successfully solved the problem you have.

Then seek that person out and get as close
as she’ll allow
. Dont' be shy! Ask her
to teach you exactly how she did it.

Not everyone will be comfortable teaching
you; you will hear a few “no’s”. But
by taking yourself lightly (hey...a
plug for another Fun Commandment
!),
you’ll trust that this is either not the
right person or not the right time
for them...and you’ll keep looking.

You found me, after all. So don't give up!
Not until you hear a "yes."

It’s important to remember, too, that the
impetus behind your attraction to
commiseration (rather than seeking actual
solutions) is almost always fear. If
you're like most of us, you suffer an
unwillingness to abandon your
familiar routines. Because the
known "dysfunction" is preferable to the
unknown results of something new.

Seeking an expert requires you to challenge
yourself with a different
methodology. But if you do your footwork
as I'm teaching, you can sooth your
worries. Because you can be certain that
your expert won't just pat you on
the back
- your expert knows what she's
teaching you.

Just understand this: knowing that your
expert can move you to the “next
level” does not always make it comfortable.

My friend Laurie once was a "commiserator." At
one time she was much more comfortable
sitting around with people in
the same situations as she,
complaining about things...rather than
finding someone who had first-hand
experience at solving her problems
. When
she got sick and tired of spinning
her wheels, I introduced her to this Fun
Commandment.

She found some new friends who were living
lives she wanted to emulate -
people who had things to teach her. After
some time, Laurie actually came to
accept what all successful people do: she
learned that she has two choices,
either do things the same old way, which is
eternally uncomfortable, or do
things a new way, which is only temporarily
uncomfortable.

And she learned that only an expert can
teach her how to do something
different, if she wants lasting,
sustainable results.

There really is no such thing as “standing
still,” after all. In life you’re
either growing or shrinking
. And if you
wanted to shrink you wouldn’t be
reading this. So get out of your comfort
zone and start growing. Ask an
expert to help you attain a goal today.

Oh, about that story I mentioned...it is said
that a soldier once asked the
Buddha to tell him the secret of life and
happiness. The Master replied, "Do
good, avoid evil, and keep your mind
pure." "That's it?" the soldier
asked. "A five-year-old child knows
that." "Maybe so," the Buddha said, "but
few men of eighty can practice it."

I'm grateful Laurie introduced me to the
Buddha; I'd love to know who your
experts are. Perhaps I can use them too!
