How to Find Joy in Something You
Don't Like

By Cliff Kuhn, M.D.

"It all starts with a SMILE"

Tired of feeling unhappy, a low level of worthlessness, or
worse, people often ask me how they can be happier and more
joyful. Well I'm about to give you (for free) my million-
dollar answer to this question.

Find joy in what you're doing. Or don't do it.

Period.

How's that for a hard-core, happiness directive for 2010? Follow
it and there is no way you will not radiate joy every
day. Make it your mantra and refer to it every day and you are
100% guaranteed to explode your joy-meter.

Want to lose weight? Find joy in what and how you eat. Or
don't eat those particular food items again!

Want to get physically fit? Find joy in your physical activity
and exercise. Or try new activities and exercises!

Want to make more money? Find joy in your job and the tasks
associated with it. Or find a new job!

Doing something in joy changes both you and the thing you're
doing. Joy uplifts and exalts both you and what you're doing so
that you nourish your soul and spirit while you fulfill your
responsibilities. Joy is essential for your health and
happiness!

Since there will be many tasks and activities you won't want to
stop doing (your job, housecleaning, laundry, meal prep, etc)
but don't usually elicit joy, you'll want to make it your
business to learn to find joy in those tasks and activities. Luckily
for you, using humor to find joy in unwanted tasks is
relatively simple - as you've learned in It All Starts with a
SMILE.

You can call upon a myriad of my Smile Strategies to find joy in
the normally joyless tasks it wouldn't make sense to stop
doing. My favorite is making little games out of mundane or
onerous tasks; adopting a child-like attitude and playing
pretend. For example, while mopping the floor: "I'm a giant and
the dirt on the floor represents all the little people I'm
rounding up for relocation..."

Sound silly? Perhaps it is. But I prefer silliness (and joy)
to negative thoughts (and resentment) any day! Please join
me!
