How to Find Your Lost Keys

"It all starts with a SMILE"

"Arrgh!", I yelled. Red-faced with anger,
I was tearing apart my hotel room looking
for my damn car keys. It was already eight
minutes past checkout time and in another
five minutes I would be late for my sendoff
speech at the Association for Applied and
Therapeutic Humor's annual meeting.

In desperation, I sat down on my hotel bed
to try to remember the last place I had
seen the keys. As I looked up I noticed,
out the window, a gorgeous cumulus nimbus
cloud framed against a picture-perfect
azure morning sky. For the first time
since my rampage began, I relaxed and
thought about how grateful and fortunate I
was.

And, as I looked down from the cloud, there
were my car keys sitting on the window
ledge. Where, of course, they had been all
along. My anger and frustration had
literally blinded me.

It's amazing who quickly we can lose sight
of what's important, even what's real,
isn't it. Wouldn't you benefit from a
simple to use tool which focuses your
attention on the important things in life? Doesn't
finding gratitude and energy sound
like great ways to utilize your humor
nature for incredible success and health
today?

You bet!

And I've got a Fun Commandment designed
specifically for this purpose: Sit Still. Take
time each day to sit still, especially
amid your most frustrating circumstances,
and the payoff will be greater awareness,
lower frustration, and more fun. Good
deal, huh?

You see, your mind is like a CD player. Although
it can hold many CDs within it, it
can only play one at a time. Your thoughts
and emotions are the CDs, of course, and
you cannot play two thoughts or emotions
simultaneously.

Go ahead and try it right now. Try to be
happy and sad at the same time. Try angry
and grateful. You can't really do it, can
you?

Which is why it's so important to have
multiple tools for ridding yourself of fear
and seriousness, which are the polar
opposites of humor and lightness. Sitting
still is a great addition to that toolbox
and I'll show you exactly how to use it.

1. Each morning, or during any point of the
day, you begin sitting still by removing
yourself from your immediate concerns. You
may not be able to physically remove
yourself; you might be taking care of a
crying baby by yourself, for example. So
removing yourself can be done simply by
closing your eyes and, as much as possible,
blocking outside stimuli.

2. Then, I want you to find a beautiful or
joyful image or sound on which to focus. It's
okay if you use a memory of something
beautiful.

3. Next, concentrate on your image or
sound. Take in the awesome miracle of
life, which you so naturally and typically
take for granted. Marvel at it's
perfection.

4. Lastly, listen to your image or sound
with both your heart and your ears. It has
something to communicate to you and, if
you're still enough, you'll be amazed at
the message it reveals!

The exercise I described makes a wonderful
meditation lasting as long as you desire. But
it works just as well if used during a
three-minute break from your day. Do you
have a mere three minutes to spare today in
return for supercharged energy, focus, and
happiness?

In fact, if you practice this Commandment
enough you'll soon find it becomes a part
of your life. That's the beauty of my Fun
Commandments - each one is like a new judo
move in your arsenal of humor "martial
arts." Except, instead of defeating evil
ninja assassins from Japan, you're
defeating a much more serious and
threatening enemy with your left/right Fun
Commandment combinations! Your
seriousness.

Please share with me the messages you
receive as you sit still this week.
