How to Enjoy Food Poisoning

My son Greg called me on Friday morning and asked me if I wanted
to go to the big football game Saturday. The University of
Louisville versus the University of Kentucky. Both schools
debuted new head coaches, U of L's newly expanded stadium was
being inaugurated, we were invited to some great tailgate
parties, and the rivalry between the schools is always intense.

I was excited.

Then Greg called me Saturday morning and asked if I'd pick up
some Pepto-Bismal on my way to his house. Seems he woke up with
a bad bug but was hoping to shake it and still attend the game.

I was bummed. Well, okay, I felt bad for Greg. But I was also
disappointed about the game.

Although Greg and I tried everything, it became apparent
that he might've picked up some food poisoning from a burger at
a high school football game Friday night. In his delirium, he
thought about suing but, since he works for the high school,
wisely reconsidered. The upshot, however, was that Greg would
miss the big game.

Greg implored me to attend the game without him. Using my Smile
Strategies, it didn't take me more than a couple minutes to make
my decision: I would stay with Greg and watch the game on TV. After
all, the reason the game was going to be so fun was that
the two of us would be attending together.

What Smile Strategy did I recall? Take Charge of What You Can. My
plans were to attend the game with Greg and I was very
excited about that. But when the circumstances changed, I took
charge of my attitude and actions and still made the best of it.

This Smile Strategy is all the more important to your happiness
when you consider what incredible influencers your attitudes,
ideas, and actions are. Can you think of anything in life
you’ve been able to achieve without calling at least one of
those three allies into action? They are, in fact, the only
choices in your arsenal when you want to influence the results
of your footwork.

So you must take charge of the things you’re in control of. It
is imperative that you spoon feed your attitudes and ideas
positive messages to shape and mold them into upbeat motivators
and change agents. You’re really counting on these things to
help you shape your life like clay on a potter’s wheel.

And I implore you to choose your actions very carefully, since
your actions are your most powerful method of influencing your
world. Actions not only help you create the physical world in a
manner of your choosing, but they also instruct your
subconscious mind about what it should believe. This is the
very reason that the way to build courage is to act courageous
when you’re scared.

This is why it is impossible to think yourself into a new way of
living. You must live yourself into a new way of thinking.

Of course, healthy humor is the grandest foundation for your
attitudes, ideas, and actions. Taking yourself lightly is not
only fun; it creates energy, upbeat attitudes, resilience,
optimism, creativity, and enhances human interaction. You
couldn’t ask for a more potent rocket fuel for yourself.

Greg, by the way, was feeling better by that evening. I had fun
watching the game with him and it was also, actually, very
fulfilling to be with him and nurse him a bit. Brought back
great memories from his childhood. Greg expressed his
appreciation too; it meant a lot to have me there.

The final outcome of the day was wonderful for me. And it had
nothing to do with whether or not we attended the game as
planned, nor who won the game. In fact, I won the game because
I had a great day once I took charge of what I could. And I
know you will do that same this week!
