How Gas Can Help You Have a Better 2008

"It all starts with a SMILE"

I once had a patient, I'll call him "Steven", who suffered from
unrelenting, chronic back pain. He was visiting his ten-week-
old grandson for the first time and Steven's experience with
the little guy produced wonderful results. I'll tell you more
about that in a moment...

Because our first, instinctual communications are forged by
family, deciding how your family will handle fun is one of the
most vital decisions you make. Why? Because handling fun is
not so cut-and-dried, there is a potential for fear to become
involved.

To hold in your hands, literally and figuratively, such
momentous responsibility for life, to be the recipient of that
degree of trust, to feel that depth of responsibility, is a
daunting experience. For new (or more experienced) parents,
fear can definitely be in the air.

The family, however we define it, is so vitally important to us
that the absence of it has pathological consequences on
continued human development. Why? One reason the consequences
of family's absence can be so dire stems from the role of
interpersonal communication occurring within it.

Imagine being a two-month-old infant (unless you can actually
remember it) who forms her first smile. That smile is your
earliest attempt at communication, and it only becomes
communication when it receives a response from the family
around you. Imagine what happens to our development if that
smile is not welcomed and reciprocated by people who want to
love and care about us.

This is the foundation of the fun, fearless family and serves
notice to why such a family is so important.

About Steven and his little grandson: "People said it could
have been gas," Stephen told me, "but I know it wasn't. It was
a smile. It was like the roof the roof had opened up to let
sunshine directly into the room. I felt a warm feeling all
through me."

"Then I noticed something, Dr. Kuhn." Steven continued. "My
pain was gone. The pain never leaves me, but, just for a
moment, it disappeared completely. It was a miracle."

That's quite a powerful first smile and it illustrates how
important a family is; there is no more important learning
ground for communication because the family is where all
communication starts.

We'll continue to explore family fun in the coming issues of
The Fun Times. In the meantime...Happy 2008!
