How to Get Excited When Things
Go Wrong

Have you had a day (or a week) lately where everything seemed
to go wrong?

Me too. Here was my day last Thursday:

1. I came out of an appointment and discovered my radiator was
leaking badly.

2. When I got home, in my rental, ($400 lighter thanks to the
mechanic's bill) I realized that I'd left my house keys at the
garage. And my wife was out of town.

3. When I finally got back home with the keys, I discovered
that my digital satellite was on the fritz. More money gone. And,
worse yet, I had planned to entertain myself that evening
by watching one of my favorite movies.

I know you've had worse days than this. But I also know that
you can empathize when I tell you that I felt like the universe
was conspiring against me.

But humor came to my rescue again. How? It wasn't through
jokes - I wasn't in a laughing mood. Humor helped me because
it is my state of being; I've learned that my humor nature
represents a willingness to take myself less seriously, even
amid serious responsibilities.

A dear friend called me last Thursday evening and reminded me
that I don't have to take myself so seriously. After I told
him what had gone wrong that day, he excitedly
said, "Congratulations!"

He went on the explain that Buddhists believe when everything
seems to go wrong it is because the universe is giving birth to
something amazing and wonderful. He told me that the universe
simply needs to distract me so that I won't interfere with the
perfection of its birth. Then I got excited too.

Feeling excited about my bad day was certainly a change from
feeling sorry for myself or angry with the universe for all my
bad luck. And I wouldn't have even been able to hear my
friend's message if I hadn't practiced letting my humor nature
be my state of mind. Humor infuses me with open-mindedness and
lightness - which makes virtually anything possible.

I hope my friend's story helps you like it did me. And, if
you're not in a place where humor is guiding you, please let me
know how I can help!
