Why I Give Until My Hands are Empty

You are a happy, healthy, and successful
person. But you want to be even more so. Me
too. How lucky we are that the world in
which we live is abundant.

The problem is you're not sharing in that
abundance to the extent you'd like. Perhaps
your hands have been too full
lately. Allow me to explain.

Success, health, and happiness are not zero-
sum games; as you increase your levels of
these resources you do not lower my
levels. In fact, you don't even detract
from my ability to have more too! There is
more than enough happiness, health, and
success for us all to share.

But there is one paradoxical requirement
for your greater sharing of life's
abundance. In order to receive, you must
give. This paradox is a rule handed down
through our history and I've created a Fun
Commandment around it: Empty Your Hands.

Emptying your hands is a metaphor you must
take quite literally. If your hands are
full you cannot receive anything else,
right? And so you must give freely in
order to clear space for additional
resources.

And this Commandment finds its way to you
because there is another aspect to the rule
of giving. You receive that which you
give. Thus, you can decide what you will
give and have more influence over what you
will receive. Can you guess what I want
you to give? You get three and the first
two don't count!

I want you to freely give healthy fun and
humor to your friends because that is
exactly what you need in return to be at
your healthiest and most successful. But,
of course, this Commandment works with any
resource - time, assistance, friendship,
energy, money, etc.

Emptying your hands works like this:

1. You decide what you most want from
life. Most of us have the same basic
desires of happiness, acceptance, self-
respect, and love. Material desires like
money, achievement, adulation, etc. are
okay too.

2. You create specific opportunities to
purposefully and lovingly give away those
very things which you most want from life. If
you want happiness, pick one person each
day and dedicate yourself to their
happiness. If you want for money, set
aside 10% of your income to joyfully give
away (even before you have paid your bills).

3. You give away those things you most
want, generously and lovingly, at every
opportunity. Consciously and openly hope
the recipient of your gifts benefits
greatly from them.

Every time you practice this exercise, your
hands will become empty. And you'll be
amazed at what appears to fill them! Just
remember, as you enjoy your new gifts of
abundance, to repeat the cycle again to
receive more. And please let me know, too,
what you find in your empty hands. I'd
love to hear about it.

Harry Potter provides the perfect antidote
to the seriousness that engulfs our
children as they become young adults. Whether
we are doing it intentionally or
not, our children learn to believe what we
believe because they watch what we do even
more than listen to what we say.In this
article, Dr. Kuhn teaches you how to use a
lesson his son stumbled upon.
