Why You Never Should've Graduated from High School

All across the United States, graduations have occurred. From
college seniors to fifth graders, young people have heard the
coveted words: "Congratulations, you're finished!" And, of
course, these graduates are enjoying the requisite presents,
accolades, and pats on the back.

Well deserved in most cases, of course. Also, unfortunately,
dangerous.

Graduates are unfortunately being exposed to one of our most
disabling myths and misconceptions. And this misconception is
so dangerous because it is so compelling and alluring. The
misconception I refer to is the myth of graduation - of being
done.

Do you suffer from this misconception? If so you're not alone. Our
graduation ceremonies and rituals introduce the notion to us
and reinforce the idea that we can achieve some elusive finish
line in our life.

If you're like me, you have suffered from it. Prior to my
introduction to humor's amazing natural medicine I used to
experience continual frustration at the fact that my life's work
never seemed to be finished. "When would I finally experience
that sense of being finished, of graduating?", I used to wonder
a lot. After all, I had accomplished most of the things I
assumed would "graduate" me to that feeling - medical degree,
family, home, professional practice, etc.

Yet serenity eluded me as surely as that fabled finish line,
until I learned about humor's gifts. Humor allowed me to dispel
my illusions about graduating from my life's work. And it also
gave me the tools I still use today to thrive outside of that
illusion.

And I am now 100% certain that today's recent graduates are
supremely equipped to follow suit.

In fact, I am so certain that young people need not fall into
the same traps I did, that I make a habit to give It All Starts
with a SMILE to the graduates I know. So that they have the
chance to learn the Smile Strategies which have helped hundreds
of humor beings fully embrace a life without graduations and
finish lines. So they can learn the Smile Strategies which
saved me from that life of frustration and illusion, just as
they have my patients and friends.

So today I call your attention, once again, to the gifts of
humor. To your antidote to the alluring illusion of
graduation. To your gifts of freedom, health, happiness, and
joy. To your humor nature.
