Hello
How Rudolph Turns You Into a Zombie

Do you watch the holiday television specials? My favorites are
the old-fashioned stop-motion animations like Rudolph the
Red-Nosed Reindeer. When I watch those television shows with my
grandchildren, I’m always reminded of my own children’s
Christmases.
But did you know that nostalgia appears to not be the real
reason we’re so drawn to holiday television programs? In fact the
reason we’re drawn to television in general may surprise you. More
about that in a moment…
This holiday season, so beloved by many of us, is usually
thought of as a season of giving. We give children who dream of
Santa’s visit a pass – but the adults are usually reminded of
the abundant joy found through the act of giving. Giving of our
time, love, energy, thoughts, and of material gifts enhance the
best parts of the human spirit.
And I believe this is why the holidays remain so special – even
if we stop believing in Santa!
But I want to call your attention to a part of these holidays
that adults often overlook. And this aspect of the holidays is
just as important and beneficial as giving. I want you to take
a moment to think about…receiving.
Sound strange to think about “getting” instead of giving during
this special season? If you’re like me (and most adults) it
probably does.
Yet during these next four or five weeks you’ll be receiving so
much. You’ll be given gifts, well-wishes, greetings, party
invitations, hugs, smiles, cookies, decorations, etc. The list
goes on and on – whether you have small children in your life or
not. In fact, you’ll undoubtedly be getting these things
whether you actively celebrate a holiday during this season or
not!
And how you receive a gift (of any kind) reflects how you feel
about yourself and about your worth as a humor being. Enjoying
a gift, relishing in the thoughtfulness and love inherent in its
presentation, lets you know that you find yourself deserving of
such things. It also honors and exalts the giver; don’t you
love it when someone truly enjoys one of your gifts?
So this holiday season, don’t play “humble” when you’re given
one of the multitude of gifts you’ll receive. Instead thank the
abundant love and generosity of both the gift giver and the
universe. And bask in the glow of knowing that this gift, no
matter how “small”, is a reflection of the value that you bring
to this world!
And know that, yes, you DO bring immense value to this world. Thank
you for that gift!
Television, by the way, has a much more valuable purpose than
letting us watch nostalgic holiday specials (I say with my
tongue firmly in my cheek). It turns out that your brain uses
13% less energy while watching television than it does when you
are doing nothing at all! You know that “zombie” stare we get
while watching TV? Rudolph actually turns off our brains
for us when we watch him!
