How to Keep From Being Whacked with
a Stick This Holiday

By Cliff Kuhn, M.D.

"It all starts with a SMILE"

Do you have any annoying family holiday traditions? You're
lucky you weren't around during medieval times. I'll explain
why in a moment...

You're enjoying your day. The birds are singing and you're
humming a happy tune. A beam of sunlight finds its way through
the clouds and warms you face, shining just for you.

Then, out of nowhere, you wonder whether the sales presentation
you made yesterday will be accepted. A sliver of worry
intrudes, "What if it gets rejected?" All of a sudden you feel
the familiar churn of anxiety surge through your stomach.

Suddenly the clouds cover the sun. Car horns squelch the
birds' songs. And that stupid, annoying song you were humming
becomes the last thing you want to hear.

You've gotten serious.

You're doing what 94% of all adults do every day. You're doing
what you were trained to do (straight out of "How to Be a Grown-
up 101"). And you're already teaching the next generation to
follow in your footsteps.

Yikes! We all do it from time to time.

Your humor nature wants you to go with the flow. Your humor
nature wants you to use your heart, not your head. That's why
my Smile Strategy, Don't Look Down, is so vital for you.
Don't overanalyze. Don't play out all the scenarios. Don't
imagine the worst case scenarios. Don't Look Down! Just keep
riding that wave we call "life".

You're not protecting yourself when you get into stress-mode
like that anyway. All you're doing is acting on habitual
thought patterns and beliefs. You're doing as you were taught
by your elders.

But you've read The Fun Factor and It All Starts with a Smile;
you know better today! So Don't Look Down and enjoy a
wonderful week!

By the way, compare you annoying holiday traditions to
this: "Hot cockles" was a popular game at Christmas in
medieval times. It was a game in which the other players took
turns striking the blindfolded player, who had to guess the
name of the person delivering each blow. "Hot cockles" was
still a Christmas pastime until the Victorian era. Lucky them,
huh?

Enjoy your holidays!
