Hello
Why You Don't Need to Look
at My Teeth

"It all starts with a SMILE"
You’re familiar with the phrase “straight
from the horse’s mouth”, right? It refers
to information that is authenticated
because it comes from an authoritative
source. But do you know where the phrase
is derived? I’ll tell you about that in a
moment…
Today I want to describe the physical
process your brain undergoes when you
experience humorous stimuli. And I’ve also
got a special secret to tell you about that
process.
When you’ve just heard, read, or seen
something potentially amusing, the first
thing your brain does is process the
words. This occurs on the left side of
your brain, which is the part of your brain
you use to understand language.
Once you understand the words (or images)
involved, you then decide if the stimulus
is funny. And how funny it is. This
decision occurs in your brain’s frontal
lobes and is undoubtedly greatly influenced
by your mood and your environment.
(By the way, if you’ve ever seen my stand-up
comedy you know that my audience’s frontal
lobes are usually saying, “Try again, Dr.
Kuhn”!)
After you understand the words, and decide
whether the stimulus is funny, your brain
sends signals to your motor cortex (near
the top of your head) – so that you’ll
engage the appropriate response. Your
response can vary from a frown to a belly
laugh (whoops, I almost gave away your
special secret).
Finally, the entire process I just
described engages your limbic system. Your
limbic system in an interconnected network
existing throughout your brain. It is
vitally important for your emotions.
An interesting process, huh? But what
about your special secret?
Well, first of all, I want you to know that
we think other animals can laugh. Young
chimps, for example, make sounds when
playing or being tickled that could very
well be laughter. Cool info…but that’s not
your special secret.
Secondly, I want to remind you that humor
is very, very good for your entire body –
not just your brain! Just to touch the tip
of the iceberg - from the release of
endorphins into your blood stream, to
stimulating your mood to higher levels, to
enhancing your immune system through the
production of more of your disease fighting
cells, humor is your number one natural
medicine. You already know all about this
if you’re read The Fun Factor…this is not
your special secret.
Your special secret is that all the
physical and mental health benefits of
humor kick in at the level of a smile. That’s
right, amusing yourself enough to
merely smile makes you healthier and
wealthier today! And surely you can always
find a reason to smile, right?
By the way, “straight from the horse’s
mouth” comes from the days when horses were
our primary means of transportation. Knowing
the age of a horse you were
purchasing was as important as knowing how
many miles are on a car you buy today. And
how did you know how old a horse was
(without having to rely on the seller of
the horse)? By looking at the horse’s
teeth.
So the information the potential horse
buyer needed to know always came “straight
from the horse’s mouth.”
Take it from me; you don’t want to examine
my teeth! Just take my word for it. Smile!
