Hello
How a Bank's "Locating Their Target" Causes
You to Be Serenaded in the Elevator

Want to hear a funny story about how a bank
locating it's target allows us all
to be serenaded as we ride elevators?
In 1968, the Crocker Bank in California
located their target - they wanted to
attract young people to their bank. But,
because there was a strong anti-
establishment attitude among college
graduates at the time, Crocker Bank
decided they had to make a special effort
to lure this demographic audience.
Because young people were just starting
out, they commissioned song writer
Paul Williams to write a song with the
phrase, "we've only just begun."
Although
the bank would use the song for
their commercials, Paul Williams was
free to do whatever he wanted with it.
What did Paul Williams do? He sold it to
the Carpenters, of course, who
turned it into a number one hit, a wedding
standard, and an elevator music
staple. The bank meanwhile had quite a
different outcome with the song. I'll
tell you about that in a moment...
Two weeks ago, I introduced you to my
newest Fun Commandment, Locate your
Target. I told you about my friend and
patient Syd, who, despite a short-term
prognosis after being diagnosed with
cancer, set a goal of ten more years of
life.
I’m proud to say that Syd made it seven
years. He fell three years short of
his goal, but both of us agreed, during one
of our last conversations, that he
wouldn’t have made it that long without the
original goal of ten. We were
both very grateful for Syd’s optimistic
goal, because it was a guiding beacon
around which he dedicated his daily actions
and drew motivation for them.
That’s what your goals will do for you. A
defined goal has gravity; the
universe seems to pull you in your goal’s
direction even when you don’t feel
particularly motivated to do so. That type
of inertia is uplifting and
inspiring and, if you don’t hit the target
dead-center, you usually land
pretty close.
In fact, my experience is that most goals
I, or my patients, have set are
reached. When you see your target so
clearly defined, it actually becomes
difficult to veer of its course. You have
to intentionally sabotage your
efforts to not achieve it.
How to set your goals? I offer you a
simple plan. Get out a piece of paper
and:
1. Define at least three most desired
achievements or outcomes one year
from now, five years from now, and ten
years from now. They may involve your
entire family or they can be personal.
2. For each desired outcome, create at
least two action steps necessary
to achieve it. Perhaps you need to me more
industrious, save money, or go
back to school.
3. Put the list somewhere you can’t miss it
every day. And read it everyday. And
start taking small action steps.
You’re already an energetic, productive
person. Now your efforts will be so
much more targeted; you’ll be a laser beam
of focused action whether you like
it or not! And you’re going to be so happy.
The Crocker Bank, it turns out, ultimately
realized they didn't want young
people's business. The commercial caused
young adults to flock to the bank to
borrow money. But they had no collateral
and turned out to be bad risks!
Don't let Crocker Bank's funny experience
turn you away from locating your
target. Start today. And share your
results with me; I'd love to hear from
you.
