How to Enjoy Crosby, Stills and Nash

By Cliff Kuhn, M.D.

"It all starts with a SMILE"

I don't know why the Crosby, Stills, and Nash tune, Love the One
You're With, appeared in my head the other day. While it's a
bit catchy, I've never been able to reconcile the message of the
song - which seems to be about infidelity. (I could be wrong
about that; I'm certainly not well-versed on the meaning of song
lyrics).

Then it occurred to me that the song might have a different
message that coincides with the healing power of humor.

Love the one you're with... What if that had a more
metaphorical meaning? What if that phrase referred to a
commitment to find ways to enjoy where you are, what you're
doing, and who you are - right at this moment? Even if it's not
exactly what you'd choose if you were writing the script.

And what if we allow our humor nature to help us with that
commitment today? Is there anything better to assist you in
finding the joy in your circumstances? To help you find
gratitude in this moment? Even if it's gratitude simply for
what you've escaped!

So we've just transformed a mildly catching, 30-year-old song
about a distasteful subject into a self-help reminder. Indeed,
the most important thing you may do today is to find a way to
love the one you're with. To find a way to love and enjoy who
you are and what you are doing.

This kind of joy is more important that any one single thing
that you do to take care of yourself! It's that important. And
your humor nature is exactly what you need to extract every
ounce of your ability to love the one you're with.

And, if nothing else, if you ever find yourself humming that
song in your head too, at least it'll now carry a very important
and positive connotation for you.

Some Humor to Help You Smile

Man walks out to the street and catches a taxi just going by. He
gets into the taxi, and the cabbie says, "Perfect timing. You're
just like Frank."

Passenger: "Who?"

Cabbie: "Frank Feldman. He was a guy who did everything right
all the time. Like my coming along when you needed a cab,
things happened like that to Frank Feldman every single time."

Passenger: "There are always a few clouds over everybody."

Cabbie: "Not Frank Feldman. He was a terrific athlete. He could
have won the Grand-Slam at tennis. He could golf with the pros. He
sang like an opera baritone and danced like a Broadway star. And
you should have heard him play the piano. He was an amazing
guy."

Passenger: "Sounds like he was something really special."

Cabbie: "There's more... He had a memory like a computer. He
remembered everybody's birthday. He knew all about wine, which
foods to order and which fork to eat them with. He could fix
anything. Not like me. I change a fuse, and the whole street
blacks out. But Frank Feldman, he could do everything right."

Passenger: "Wow, some guy then."

Cabbie: "He always knew the quickest way to go in traffic and
avoid traffic jams Not like me, I always seem to get stuck in
them. But Frank, he never made a mistake, and he really knew how
to treat a woman and make her feel good. He would never answer
her back even if she was in the wrong; and his clothing was
always immaculate, shoes highly polished too. He was the
perfect man! He never made a mistake. No one could ever measure
up to Frank Feldman!"

Passenger: "An amazing fellow. How did you meet him?"

Cabbie: "Well, I never actually met Frank. He died. I married
his widow."
