Hello
How to Use Manure to Improve
Your Day Today

"It all starts with a SMILE"
You can choose to search for a pony anytime
you encounter a pile of manure, I can
promise you that you can be happy under any
circumstance. Your happiness, after all,
has almost nothing to do with your
circumstances anyway. Some circumstances
certainly present great challenges, but
your ability to decide to search for the
pony is your ticket out of their grip.
One need only look at the example of the
German psychiatrist, Viktor Frankl, who
watched his wife, parents, and brother
perish in Nazi concentration camps. In the
midst of daily torture and deprivation, the
worst conditions a human could imagine,
Frankl realized that he alone had control
over his responses. Viktor Frankl began to
look for the pony by imagining himself,
after being freed, helping patients learn
to do the same thing with their lives.
In time, Frankl realized that he was
actually freer than his Nazi captors
because he was in control of his responses
to stimuli while they allowed themselves to
be controlled by it. And, in fact, many of
the Nazi camp guards began to admire
Frankl, asking him for advice and counsel. So
great did his light shine after he
learned to start looking for the pony!
And that leads us to one of the most
important reasons that this Fun Commandment
is so important. One of the prerequisites
of having fun is…you must be willing to
have it. Don’t take your willingness to
have fun for granted; an honest assessment
will reveal that you are much more serious,
during your daily affairs, than you’d
like! Your manure piles are stressing you
out!
The act of looking for fun is an external
sign that you are willing to have it and it
teaches your mind, body, and spirit that
looking for the pony is your new mindset. I
taught you that even a fake smile
introduces physiological benefits to your
body and, thus, you will soon feel good
enough to have a genuine one. Looking for
the pony does the same thing; you are
guaranteed to be happier, whether you find
the pony or not, because the act of looking
introduces beneficial physiological and
emotional stimulus.
Here are three keys to finding a pony, no
matter how deep the manure pile:
1. Recognize that “good” and “bad” are
subjective terms. Recall some something
you wished you had more than anything, but
are now so grateful you don’t. It was a
tragedy when Tom dumped you back in
college, but now it you’re pretty glad that
happened aren’t you?
2. Take the long view. As another of
my Fun Commandments teaches, get in the
habit of asking yourself whether this will
matter in ten years. Certainly a few
things will make that cut, but far fewer
than you’re letting stress you out right
now.
3. Remember that you have complete
control over your thoughts and what you’re
focusing on. Despite circumstances which
appear bad, you can still choose to be
positive and optimistic. Because,
ultimately, looking for the pony is all
about having faith that you are equipped to
deal with whatever life presents.
And you are equipped, fully loaded in fact
with a potent humor nature. You are going
to be okay because your humor nature is
being sharpened by these Fun Commandments
and your commitment to fun and happiness. While
you will still face trying
circumstances, your world is not one of
unending and intolerable suffering.
