The Fun Times - Why Cannablism is Not a Serious Suggestion

Why Cannablism is Not a Serious Suggestion

"It all starts with a SMILE"

Some people find my claim that having fun is not only important,
but almost always possible, to be quite audacious. But did you
know that one famous author once advocated eating Irish infants
as a way to counteract hunger problems in Europe? Now that’s
audacious! More about his cannibalism proposal in a moment…

I was speaking to a group three weeks ago and a teenager in
attendance volunteered to help me lug and load all my props and
books. She must’ve been pretty bored to see helping a smiling
“old man” like me as a viable alternative to milling around with
the other audience members! And I was grateful for her
assistance (and the chance to have a friendly conversation).

We hit it off so well that I gave her an autographed copy of ”It
All Starts with a SMILE…” when I was all set up. As I was
inscribing my message to her I turned and said, “I’m going to
share with you the single most important piece of advice I can
give. In all my years as a doctor, I can unequivocally state
that if you follow this advice I can guarantee you a successful
and happy life.”

I wasn’t guaranteeing her a life where everything always happens
just the way she wants it, of course. Nor am I guaranteeing
you that! But I am guaranteeing you that you can have the
ability to both make things as good as they can be and also find
a way to make the best of (and find peace in) situations you
can’t change.

What did I tell her?

I told her to make it her life’s work (her career, if you will)
to have fun. For the rest of her life, no matter what she does
with her time, on a daily basis, find a way to have fun.

Responding to her puzzled expression I explained: When you are
having fun you are in a low-stress state - you’re creative,
unbound, healthy, and fully alive. Most adults, unfortunately,
wait until they are done with work, chores, and responsibilities
before they allow themselves to have fun. They reserve fun for
weekend evenings, holidays, or vacations.

But there are two horrific problems with that plan: 1. 90% of
an adult’s life is spent in activities which don’t qualify as
sanctioned fun-time; adults’ lives are mostly filled with doing
the laundry, going to work, fixing the leaky faucet, making
dinner, getting the oil changed, etc. So, consequently, most
adults are never having fun. 2. When an adult only has fun
during the few sanctioned fun-times she has available, she soon
forgets how to truly have fun!

Most adults are not having much fun at all! So, consequently,
most adults are living in a stress-filled, pressured, confined,
harried, unhealthy state! “Don’t make that mistake”, I implored
my young helper.

Luckily for you, you already hold the antidote to no-fun in your
hands (although I’m sorry I might not have had the chance to
autograph it for you). Pull “It All Starts with a SMILE…” off
your bookshelf this week and browse through my Smile Strategies
again. I promise you you’ll have more fun!

The author who suggested the cannibalization of Irish babies, by
the way, was none other than Jonathan Swift (of “Gulliver’s
Travels” fame). A master of satire, his book, “A Modest
Proposal”, shocked Europe in 1729 by logically and unemotionally
advocating the eating of Irish infants. His satire called
attention to the exploitation of Irish laborers by the English.

I hope you take advantage of my “modest proposal” and remember
to have fun this week, no matter what you’re doing!
