Hello
How to Give Your Movie More Happy Endings

While driving to let my daughter's dogs out to pee last week, it
occurred to me that this task, in and of itself, was rather
mundane. From my perspective, it was not exciting, nor was it
dangerous, nor even good or bad. Just a relatively boring,
routine task that I was happy to do for her.
But, I thought, if this were a movie there would be a soundtrack
playing right now to tell me what kind of scene was about to
unfold. There would be ominous music playing if I was about to
encounter danger. There would be goofy music playing if I was
about to be involved in something humorous. There would even be
whimsical music playing if I were about to do something
irrelevant.
Then I smiled and thought, "It would be nice if I had a
soundtrack to let me know what kind of event was ahead." That
idea made me chuckle.
But my chuckle was soon followed by a true "ah-ha" moment. "Wait
a minute," I thought, "I DO have a soundtrack! My
soundtrack is the nonstop stream of commentary I give, each day,
about my life. My soundtrack is my running internal dialogue
about my life events and circumstances!"
It wasn't heard in musical form, but I realized I had already
played a soundtrack for letting the dogs out by thinking about
how mundane and insignificant that event would be. And I had to
laugh when I realized that I could have turned that task into
any type of event - simply by having different thoughts about it.
I could have made letting my daughter's dogs out a funny event. I
could have made it a stressful affair. I could have made it
scary. And on an on. Simply by having different thoughts about
the task's meaning and consequences for my life.
You might guess that my next thoughts were a reflection upon how
often I turn my life events into stressful, scary, or otherwise
unenjoyable things. Simply because I choose those types of
thoughts about them. Simply because, through my thoughts, I
choose that type of soundtrack for my life events.
If you're like me, you probably choose unfun soundtracks more
often than you care to admit. And, if you're like me, you are
saying to yourself, "Why do I do that to myself when I certainly
don't have to?"
I can't answer the question of why you do that. But I certainly
can write a prescription that I want you to follow: I want you
to play the best possible soundtrack, at all times, today. I
know not every event in your life will easily inspire beautiful,
uplifting, and optimistic thoughts - but you also don't have to
choose the "worst-case scenario" thoughts about them either!
Just go for the best, most positive, thoughts you can muster!
You're going to find that the natural medicine of humor is your
greatest ally in creating the best possible soundtrack. And
you're going to find your life, your personal movie, a lot more
enjoyable because of your new soundtrack!
