How to Stop Doing Those Things You Do

One of my Fun Commandments, Believe It Before You See It, was
especially clear to me this weekend. I had the opportunity to
compare some of my old beliefs (pre-Fun Factor) to my new
beliefs (with the Fun Factor). I thought you might enjoy
reading what I found.

This weekend I noticed, very clearly, some of the "things I do"
(as I’m calling my old, limiting, pre-Fun Factor beliefs). These
are long-held beliefs that, when activated, cause me to
feel bad and be out of alignment with my desires.

The "things I do" could include:

Feeling unlovable.

Feeling that I have to earn love and acceptance.

Feeling unworthy.

Feeling flawed.

Feeling less-than.

Being worried.

Being afraid.

I don't mean to bring your mood down by writing that. Let me
emphatically state that all those paradigms are completely
untrue! I am lovable. I am worthy. I am perfect. I am
enough! The Fun Factor has taught me that.

Before I learned to use the amazing power of humor, however, I
believed those things about myself and stayed out of alignment
with my desires. For most of my life, only on the occasions
where something or someone outside myself made me feel okay did
I not activate those beliefs.

Humor medicine has taught me that if I simply don't activate
those beliefs, I feel better about myself. And when I have
activated one of those beliefs (as evidenced by my feeling bad -
usually felt as a tightness in my gut), I can simply turn my
attention to humor, lightness, and better feeling thoughts.

I've found it important to first recognize and honor where I am
when I am feeling bad. Rather than ignore it or deny it, I
embrace it. Then, as the Fun Factor teaches, I'm able to find
a lighter side to things and let go of stress.

Let me rephrase this lesson, because I am finding it to be such
an important process: We all have limiting beliefs. You can
tell when you’re activating one (or more) of these limiting
beliefs because you feel bad (stressed, pained, worried, sad,
depressed, fearful, etc.).

Here’s an important humor medicine lesson: It’s not important
to go back and “fix” limiting beliefs; it’s important to simply
change your focus away from them when you find you are
activating them. So your only job is to pay attention to how
you feel and keep yourself happy by focusing on things that
make you happy.

Being happy is the most important thing in the world.

I need to say that, of course, I’m talking about real
happiness. Not artificial happiness as produced by a chemical,
or a one-night-stand, or any other potentially harmful and/or
self-destructive behavior.

But here’s the most important thing from last weekend… Oops. It
looks like I’ve run out of time this week. In two weeks I’ll
break this Fun Commandment, Believe It Before You See It, down
even further. So you can begin using it (like you use all the
Fun Commandments) in even more beneficial ways!
