Hello
How to Make a Lasting Resolution
By Cliff Kuhn, M.D.

"It all starts with a SMILE"
Did you make any New Year's resolutions? And, if so, how did
you state them? Positively or negatively? How you state your
resolution makes a huge difference!
Resolutions, like humor, are much more effective when they're
positive.
You know, from It All Starts with a SMILE, that humor is best
when as positive, healthy, and inclusive energy - not seeking a
victim who is excluded at the expense of a laugh. Although such
negative-based humor can elicit a laugh, it will not bring you
the health, happiness, energy, and success which you achieve
through liberal doses of healthy humor today.
I write about this today because of a New Year tradition many of
us uphold: New Year's resolutions. You know that a New Year's
resolution is a goal we set for ourselves in 2011. And now you
know that the secret to your resolutions' success is found in
modeling them after your humor nature.
The positive energy of humor is a great model for resolutions,
because resolutions work best as positive energy too. Positive
resolutions have a much greater success rate. Like positive
humor, the energy of positive resolutions is completely
different then negative ones.
For example, perhaps you want to get in better shape this year. Or
maybe you don't want to smoke anymore. You might make this
resolution: I resolve to lose 20 pounds in 2011. Or you might
say: I resolve to quit smoking in 2011.
But those are examples of negative resolutions - you would be
stating them in negative terms. Your resolutions would be much
more effective and feel much better stated positively. As: I
resolve to enjoy more exercise and healthier eating in 2011. Or:
I resolve to live my life smoke-free in 2011.
If you start to pay attention, in fact, I'll bet you'll be
surprised at how often you're stating your desires in the
negative. If you're like most people your focus is on what you
don't want, or what you want to escape, rather than on what you
desire. Just like humor (and resolutions), if you make a point
to keep your desires positive, you will see dividends in the
form of more energy, success, health, and happiness.
Just for today, when you find yourself thinking about what you
don't want, like "I don't want to be stuck in this traffic jam",
do a little switch of your energy and restate it: "I desire to
arrive at my destination." Try it. You'll notice a difference
in your energy right away.

Focusing on Fun

It's easy, and dangerous, to forget the distinction between fun
and funny; when we focus on trying to make people laugh we can
quickly get discouraged because we end up putting a lot of
pressure on ourselves. This is a mistake because, as explained in
this article, you short circuit the amazing natural medicine of
humor when you do it.
