How a Dog's Nose Can Teach You
About Energy

By Cliff Kuhn, M.D.

"It all starts with a SMILE"

I've always heard that a hot nose was the
sign of a sick dog. In fact, I've used
this as a measurement of my dog's wellness
many times. But did you know that this is
a complete myth? I'll explain why in a
moment...

No one can make you serious. Oh, I'll
admit that you encounter plenty of solemn
occasions like board meetings, funerals,
and "Ishtar" playing on cable TV. But no
one controls your attitude except you.

And your attitude is so important to your
health and success that I'm writing you a
prescription today which will help you
through those solemn occasions you find
yourself in: Be Playful. That's right,
your doctor's orders are to be playful all
the time. I want being playful to be your
first response, your ingrained habit,
because you'll be able to thwart
seriousness at every turn.

I'm not telling you to start making jokes
or elicit laughter during inappropriate
moments. I'm also not prescribing that you
take your responsibilities less seriously. I'm
not called "The Irresponsibility
Doctor", for goodness sake! Those
activities would be childish and would not
lead you toward your greatest health and
success - the promise my prescription has
consistently delivered to my patients for
many years.

No. I'm calling for you to set goals and
work hard to attain them, just as you have
always done. I'm also prescribing
playfulness, however, because being playful
will get you there faster and healthier. Energy
through the roof, you'll soon find,
accompanies a firm commitment to be playful
at all times.

And I've yet to meet a person who says, "No
thanks. I don't need any more energy."

Being playful requires a commitment to take
yourself lightly. No matter your
circumstances, taking yourself lightly
makes you more creative, resourceful,
adaptive, responsive, and resilient. Not a
bad return on your commitment to be playful
today, huh?

A dog's nose, by the way, is hot simply if
the dog has been inactive for a while. This
probably explains why a hot nose
became associated with a sick dog, since a
sick dog is usually not very active. But a
hot, dry nose really only means that your
dog has been sleeping or resting. Which
explains why my teenage son always had a
hot, dry nose!

Next week I'll give you a blueprint for
being playful, no matter your
circumstances. Until then make a
commitment to be playful and notice how
much more energy you have! Let me know,
please, what you do with all that energy.
