Hello
How to Make Sure Your Snowman Has a Smile

"It all starts with a SMILE"
How's this for a reminder of one of my favorite Smile
Strategies, Expect the Unexpected?
Last week in Louisville it was 82 degrees, the baseball season
starts this Thursday, and our local schools have Spring Break
next week. And last night it snowed almost two inches! I
looked out the window around 10 PM and had a chuckle; just when
you think you know what to expect - wham!
Of course, for most people that is a fairly easy unexpected turn
of events to accept. But what about things that hit closer to
home? A death, a job change, a move, a large doctor bill,
etc.? I can smile at snow on March 27, you might say, but how
do I keep a light heart when my dog is hit by a car?
The answer is that smiling at the snow gives you practice for
the more challenging unexpected events. Those events which hit
you right, square in the heart are never going to feel wonderful
and you're probably never going to feel joy when you encounter
them. But if you practice smiling at the lighter uninvited
changes, like the March snowfall, you're better equipped to not
lose your mind when the heavier stuff comes along.
You see, a belief is nothing more than a practiced thought. If
you intentionally and purposefully practice thinking that
smaller scale unexpected events are okay and not ruinous, you
are building just such a belief. You are building a belief that
unexpected events are okay.
And, of course, having such a belief in place doesn't mean you
won't encounter larger-scale unexpected events. Nor does it
mean that they won't ever be painful. What that belief does
mean, however, is that you can healthily grieve the loss of your
expectations, keep your sanity, and walk through it without
creating more damage to yourself and those around you.
And you know there is no greater tool for intentionally
practicing expecting the unexpected than your humor nature. Humor
is all about the unexpected, after all.
So keep a light heart this week as you purposefully hunt for
unexpected events, no matter how small scale they are. Your
choice to smile at the March snowfalls is the best investment
you can make in yourself and will pay big dividends for you down
the road.
