Hello
How to Be Grateful for Sorrow
By Cliff Kuhn, M.D.

"It all starts with a SMILE"
Have you ever heard the phrase, "A person born blind will never
know the meaning of darkness"?
That phrase underscores the importance of contrast. One
experience illuminates the opposite; you might even say that one
experience makes the other possible. For example: would you be
able to label a task "easy" without the experience of a
"difficult" task? Would you know that something was "short"
without having experienced "tall"?
Looking at contrast in this manner is a concept we've learned
from Eastern philosophy called duality. Duality means that
everything you experience has different perspectives and it is
only your value judgment which labels the perspective you see as
"wanted" or "unwanted". The sharp knife you use to slice your
tomato, for example, has an equally important dull side.
The sharp side of your knife is the "wanted" or "useful" side
(in most people's judgment) while the dull side of the knife is
the "unwanted" or "useless" side. Yet both sides are equally
important and, in fact, the knife wouldn't be a knife without
both.
Why is this important to you? You are a humor being and, as a
reader of The Fun Times, someone interested in taking yourself
(and life) more lightly. You know, from reading my books, that
one of the tools for taking yourself more lightly is to Welcome
Your Mistakes (one of my Smile Strategies).
When you encounter a mistake, or an unwanted circumstance, it
can be helpful to remember duality That this unwanted
experience is actually making your joy possible. Perhaps you
can go as far as saying, "My suffering creates my joy. My
sorrow creates my laughter." And, in doing so, you can be
reminded of the duality of life's experiences.
I don't wish any sorrow upon you. We've all had our fair share,
I'm sure! Yet the next time sorrow intrudes, I hope you
remember that just as a person born blind cannot know darkness,
a person who hasn't known sorrow cannot know joy.
I hope you can be reminded that your suffering is making your
future joy a certainty!
