Hello
How to Write an Academy Award Winning
Soundtrack

What is your soundtrack? And who writes it?
I watched a very funny movie last weekend: I Love You, Man. In
one scene, the main character hangs up the phone in his office
cubicle with a big sigh and a defeated body slump. He has just
left a rather silly and nonsensical phone message when he was
trying to sound really cool.
This movie character has put his foot in his mouth and he feels
really stupid. He feels like he totally blew it.
But the soundtrack in this scene tells us that, regardless of
what the character might think, everything will be fine. In
fact, the soundtrack tells us that we can go ahead and chuckle
at the character's funny, failed attempt to sound cool on the
phone. Although the character lacks the foresight to know it,
the soundtrack tells us that, in the long run, everything is
going to be just fine!
As I thought about this later it occurred to me that, with a
different soundtrack, I could have had a wide array of responses
to this scene. The scene itself could've been sad. It could
have been frightening. It could've been frustrating.
And on and on. All based merely on what type of music
accompanied that scence. The scene had no inherent value as a
"good" or a "bad" event; the soundtrack told me how I should
feel about it.
Our lives unfold in an endless series of such scenes every
single day. And, just as in this movie, almost every scene in
our life has no inherent value as "good" or "bad" except what we
assign it. Except what our "soundtrack" tells us about it.
Our soundtrack is the constant stream of chatter which plays
endlessly in our minds. What is your soundtrack today? Are you
living a tragedy? A horror? Or a lightheaded comedy? Your
soundtrack is, after all, completely up to you.
And you know what? No matter how much of a failure you feel
like during any of your scenes today, just like the character in
the movie - everything is going to be just fine!
Is humor your greatest tool to help you write (or re-write) your
soundtrack today? Of course!
