Why You Should Enjoy Pulling Weeds

Ahhhhhh. Springtime! And your thoughts turn to...

Cleaning. And dusting. And lawn tool maintenance. And yard
work.

I was a guest speaker at a local high school this week. It was
sunny and nearly 70 degrees outside yet the students and I were
inside a classroom.

I asked the students, "Give me your top reasons for NOT having
fun."

I heard, "Homework. Curfew. Rules. Monday morning..." When I
added, "Having to sit in this classroom when it's a perfectly
gorgeous spring afternoon outside", there was obvious agreement!

As you well know, the reasons NOT to have fun don't stop when
adulthood is reached. Although that elusive teenage dream of
freedom is finally reached, your responsibilities increase
tenfold too. There are more reasons not to have fun for you,
today, than ever before.

What I shared with the class is that today is the perfect day to
start building a healthy habit, a habit of having fun no matter
what. A habit of enjoying the moment, no matter what. "If you
can 'in-joy' this moment, no matter if you're sitting inside a
classroom on a sunny day, your life will spontaneously burst
with joy," I told them.

We know those words are true. And yet we have a bad habit of
forgetting them when we look out the back window and see all the
weeds needing to be pulled in our garden. Suddenly, in our
minds, the sunshine and birds are gone - replaced with the onus
of tedious hours spent with a weed-puller.

Make a choice today to do whatever you do "in-joy". Spring is
reminding you that each day is a completely new birth and
inviting you to take this day as a fresh start. So whether
you're doing your spring cleaning, or sipping iced tea from a
lawn chair as you re-read It All Starts with a SMILE, immerse
yourself in the joy of the moment today!

Oh, and by the way, we all agreed to take an impromptu field
trip outside toward the end of class. The sunshine was
wonderful - yet, at that point, the sun's rays were merely a
reflection of the sunshine already present in our hearts through
our decision to "in-joy" the moment. I know you will have
similar experiences this week!
