Why You Never Have to Worry About Not Being Funny

"It all starts with a SMILE"

I recently had a chance to watch one of my favorite stand-up
comedians perform. I won't mention his name here because I
don't want to identify a comic on the bill who bombed.

Let me state that being a funny stand-up comedian is difficult
(and I should know!). I won't knock a comedian who bombs
because I've been there myself and I know that her performance
was merely a part of her learning process. On the contrary, I
applaud anyone who has the guts to get up on stage and put
herself out there like that.

Watching her bomb, however, reminded me of why some people are
reluctant to explore humor as a tool for success or health. When
you attempt to be funny, you might not be successful. And
that can leave you feeling embarrassed (or worse).

Most people don't enjoy "failing" and, for many, there's nothing
quite as scary as imagining trying to be funny in front of other
people and being met with silence. Many people quite simply
don't think they have what it takes to be funny.

And many of those people are correct. Frankly, some who've seen
my stand-up act would say I fall into that category too. Although
I would never agree, of course. ;-)

And watching that comedian bomb also reminded me of the
foundation of my Fun Factor prescription: you do NOT need to
tell jokes, entertain others, or even be funny to experience all
the benefits of healthy, healing humor in your life! In fact, I
actively encourage my patients and coaching clients not to try
being funny because trying to make people laugh has nothing to
do with my HA, HA, HA Prescription.

Healthy humor, as I teach you to use it, is an attitude. It is
an internal decision to take yourself less seriously by tuning
into the gentle humor you can find in any circumstance. My HA,
HA, HA Prescription is something others may never know you're
using, because while you will become more healthy, vibrant,
open, and successful, you will not ever necessarily be making
anyone laugh while you do it.

So please remember this week that using healthy humor has
nothing to do with getting "on stage" and "performing" comedy. It
is about taking your responsibilities seriously while taking
yourself less so. And in remembering this, I hope you free
yourself to enjoy the best week of your life - regardless of
your current circumstances.
