Hello
Step in Any Manure Lately?

"It all starts with a SMILE"
You’ve got a pile of manure sitting on your
plate right now. We all do. Remember the
phrase, “Every rose has its thorns”? Not
everything you encounter in life is
immediately recognizable as “fun.” Some of
your circumstances feel like manure, at
first encounter.
But while no one would disagree that some
things are not immediately recognizable as
fun, you should focus upon the
word “immediately.” As in not right now,
but not forever. And, as in, not
recognizable as fun without a little effort.
Because I’ll go on record that everything
in life has the potential to produce,
sustain, or lead to fun and happiness. Fun
and happiness exists inside every event and
circumstance because fun is at the core of
our existence – fun is what we seek. Some
fun is merely more difficult to uncover.
That’s why I wrote my latest Fun
Commandment, Look for the Ponies Everyday.
Remember the joke about the boy who wanted
a pony for his birthday. On that special
morning, he awoke before everyone and ran
to the barn to find his pony. Upon opening
the stall, he found nothing but manure
piled high. His parents found him shortly
thereafter, digging enthusiastically
through the manure. When asked why, he
replied, “With all this manure, there’s got
to be a pony in here somewhere!”
Looking for ponies in your manure piles is
a rewarding activity on at least two
levels. One, if you choose to look for
ponies you will find them. And two, the
search itself is a highly rewarding
activity because it becomes a self-
fulfilling prophecy. That’s right, the
mere search for pony in your manure pile is
enough to make you happy – whether you find
the pony or not.
And because you can choose to search for a
pony anytime you encounter a pile of
manure, I can promise you that you can be
happy under any circumstance. Your
happiness, after all, has almost nothing to
do with your circumstances anyway. Some
circumstances certainly present great
challenges, but your ability to decide to
search for the pony is your ticket out of
their grip.
One need only look at the example of the
German psychiatrist, Viktor Frankl, who
watched his wife, parents, and brother
perish in Nazi concentration camps. In the
midst of daily torture and deprivation, the
worst conditions a human could imagine,
Frankl realized that he alone had control
over his responses. Viktor Frankl began to
look for the pony by imagining himself,
after being freed, helping patients learn
to do the same thing with their lives.
In time, Frankl realized that he was
actually freer than his Nazi captors
because he was in control of his responses
to stimuli while they allowed themselves to
be controlled by it. And, in fact, many of
the Nazi camp guards began to admire
Frankl, asking him for advice and counsel. So
great did his light shine after he
learned to start looking for the pony!
In two weeks, I'll teach you how to employ
this Commandment to make your life even
better than you've got it now!

How to Infuse Yourself with Energy, Health,
and Success - by Focusing on Fun
By Clifford Kuhn, M.D.
It's easy, and dangerous, to forget the
distinction between fun and funny; when we
focus on trying to make people laugh we can
quickly get discouraged because we end up
putting a lot of pressure on ourselves. This
is a mistake because, as explained in
this article, you short circuit the amazing
natural medicine of humor when you do
it.
