Hello
How to Surrender Without Losing
By Cliff Kuhn, M.D.

"It all starts with a SMILE"
Surrender doesn’t always have the most positive connotations in
our go-go, win-at-all-cost society. Heck, a lot of
professional athletes sure wouldn’t have gotten where they are
if they had said, “Oh well, this is as strong as I can get
without steroid; I’ll guess I’ll just have to accept it.”
Though many of us wish they would’ve.
Not surrendering, in the case of steroids, has gotten some pro
baseball players in huge trouble. Not surrendering, in the
case of your humor aptitude, can get in almost the same! Surrendering
to your humor nature is your key to unleashing it.
Surrender, today, to your inclination to experience humor and
fun. Your inclination and ability to experience humor and fun,
no matter what you’re doing, is your humor aptitude. And
you’ve got by the boatload!
To surrender, be aware of your greatest foils (from my new
book, It All Starts with a Smile!):
1. The Desire for Control – Remember that, when you
surrender, you’re only surrendering control of things you never
had control over anyway. Control over those things was never
more than an illusion.
2. The Desire to Be Strong – Surrendering is not a sign of
weakness; fighting an impossible opponent is not bravery, it's
foolishness.
3. Sheer Stubbornness – The “my way or the highway”
attitude will make you a pretty lonely person. You may be
right, but you won’t have anyone to share that with.
4. Attachment to Familiarity – Familiar pain, though it
sounds crazy, is often preferable to doing new things. It is
comforting to know what will happen, even if it hurts.
5. Fear of Uncertainty – The unknown, your brain will tell
you, is a monster. Your brain, although well-intentioned, is
lying to you.
You should also remember that surrendering is not an act of
giving up; it’s a way to give in. Surrendering means that
you’re recognizing that some things are beyond your control…the
things you never had control over to begin with! Surrendering
does not mean you abandon control, you simply realign it.
So surrender to your humor aptitude – your God-given ability to
see life from a lighter perspective. Your fears and worries
are nothing more than habitual thought patterns – they’re only
as real as you want to make them! And, just like Harry
Potters’ Patronus spell, you can chase those thought patterns
away to day with your humor nature.
