Hello
How to Not be Happy all the Time
By Cliff Kuhn, M.D.

"It all starts with a SMILE"
I was recognized in a Louisville bookstore two weeks ago as I
browsed the self-help isle.
She was complimentary and then got a strange look on her face. It
was obvious she had something to share, so I invited her to
ask me anything.
Holding up my book, she asked, "Do you really think people can
be happy all the time?"
"Not on your life," I answered with a smile. "And I would
recommend you never try."
Strange answer from The Laugh Doctor? The man who keeps
repeating, "It all starts with a smile"?
Your emotions are a gift. Sometimes you're going to feel
angry. Or sad. Or lonely. Or any wide array of emotions which
are nowhere near being happy. You're a human being; you're
supposed to feel those things.
In fact, the desire to be happy all the time, to avoid feeling
those "unpleasant" or "unwanted" emotions, is what lead many to
use chemicals to change how they feel. As a healthy humor
being, you know that it is okay to not feel happy sometimes. You
do not need to change how you feel.
In fact, here is my prescription: when you feel unhappy, accept
how you feel, make your peace with it, and know that this too
shall pass. Your unhappy state of mind is neither your identity
nor your permanent state of being. This is simply how you feel
in this moment and brighter feelings will come eventually.
If you follow that simple prescription, you will be using your
natural medicine of humor to ease your way through rough
patches. And that is how simple it is to use humor - no jokes
required! You'll be amazed when you go back to re-read It All
Starts with a SMILE (which I hope you do this month) to learn
all the amazingly simple ways you can do this!

By Clifford Kuhn, M.D.
The Laugh Doctor
It's easy, and dangerous, to forget the distinction between fun
and funny; when we focus on trying to make people laugh we can
quickly get discouraged because we end up putting a lot of
pressure on ourselves. This is a mistake because, as explained in
this article, you short circuit the amazing natural medicine of
humor when you do it.
