Hello
How to Dance Like a Maniac (and Why)

What do the movie, “The Texas Chainsaw
Massacre”, and a number-one hit dance song
have in common? In most cases…absolutely
nothing! Except when you start adding fun
to your work. Then these two polar opposites
go hand in hand.
Let me explain.
I’m such a big advocate for using fun in all
areas of your life, especially your work
life, that I have to share this interesting
story. Fun makes you (among other things)
more energized, more creative, more open,
more intuitive, and more resilient. And in
some cases, fun can make you famous and
wealthy.
According to singer/songwriter Michael
Sembello, he and his writing partner
rented “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, a
horrifically gory slasher movie, one night
just for kicks. After watching it, they
both decided to have some fun. And that
wise decision caused Sembello’s career to
take off.
Inspired by the horror film, and tired of
trying to write love songs, Sembello and his
partner decided to get really goofy and
write a song about a mass-murderer. They
pulled out all the stops and had a great
time laughing and letting their creative
juices flow. After their fun, they got back
to work on their “real” projects.
A few weeks later, Paramount Pictures called
and asked Sembello to send some music for
use in the upcoming dance
film, “Flashdance”. Sembello’s wife copied
three songs onto a tape and sent them in to
the studio. Paramount went crazy for one of
the songs.
But guess which song it was? That’s right –
the song about the mass-murderer, which
Sembello had titled “Maniac”! Sembello’s
wife inadvertently left “Maniac”, the “joke”
song, on the end of the cassette she sent in
and Paramount felt it was a perfect fit.
Paramount changed the lyrics a bit, making
the maniac dance-crazed instead of blood-
crazed. But because of a decision to have
fun at work, the song that no one was ever
supposed to hear became Michael Sembello’s
first hit. “Maniac” became a #1 song, a
million seller, and an Oscar nominee.
So the next time you get stuck, remember
Michael Sembello and take a time-out. Be
sure that you’re incorporating fun into your
work. You never know what might happen!
