Hello
Why the "X" Belongs in Christmas

"It all starts with a SMILE"
Driving down the street last weekend, I saw a sign that made me
chuckle to myself. The sign outside a business read, "The X in
X-Mas takes Christ out of it." But did you know that "X" was
how the Greeks wrote the name "Christ"? So, while someone may
think they are making Christmas a more secular holiday by using
an "X", they are actually making it more religious.
And I think there is gentle humor there regardless of your
religious persuasion.
The holidays are here. And I've got a sure-fire way to enjoy
yourself more this holiday season...and beyond.
Let go of your expectations. Expectations are a set up for
resentment - and worse (as I'll explain in a moment).
We all do it. You think, "My spouse will be so happy because I
did the dishes and mopped the kitchen." And then your spouse
comes home in a bad mood and doesn't care.
Or you think, "My best friend will love this gift!" And she
doesn't.
And, if you're lucky, you can let it go. But more often than
not, you develop some level of resentment. It's not your fault
really. You had an expectation and it wasn't met.
Your expectations are insidious. They creep in even when you are
feeling altruistic and ruin things for you because they set you
up for disappointment.
For the next two weeks try letting go of expectations and see
what it does for your peace of mind and your humor nature. Eastern
philosophy has preached this for years. I'm betting
you'll notice your humor nature will be freed!
How do you let go? To let go of expectations you'll need to
focus on a few things differently.
1. Make sure you are doing things for you and you only. Selfishness
is not a dirty word! Don't do something because you
think it will have an effect on someone else, do it because it
reflects the kind of person you want to be.
2. Develop different ways to nurture yourself. Don't put as much
stock in how anyone else is treating you; don't allow someone
else's reactions or responses to dictate how you feel about
yourself.
3. Take yourself less seriously. Laugh with yourself; realize
that you are supposed to make mistakes - but YOU are not a
mistake! And you don't have that much power over someone else
anyway!
Try not setting expectations for the next two weeks. And let me
know how it works for you!
